⏹️ ▶️ Casey i don’t hear anything that’s probably not good

⏹️ ▶️ Marco yeah probably not

⏹️ ▶️ Casey oh i know why dumb ass your headphones aren’t plugged in and they’re still not so whatever

⏹️ ▶️ Casey you’re saying i can’t hear hi i’m back how’s that

⏹️ ▶️ Casey better it turns out that works a little better oh god please don’t put the

⏹️ ▶️ Casey oh yeah

⏹️ ▶️ John the odds of that

⏹️ ▶️ Casey vince pavlos writes in and says i’m a lawyer and the feedback you got about subsequent remedial measures

⏹️ ▶️ Casey may have been misleading no way a lawyer related law thing misleading you don’t say there

⏹️ ▶️ Casey are a lot of exceptions to the rule to the point that the rule is basically pointless and if apple

⏹️ ▶️ Casey made a statement that the old keyboard was defective that could and would definitely be used against them obviously the

⏹️ ▶️ Casey case would never go to trial and this would just be first settlement value or whatever it survived a motion to dismiss

⏹️ ▶️ Casey your initial intuition was probably right and they aren’t saying it’s fixed for legal reasons

⏹️ ▶️ John the law is complicated i was just waiting for this email so nice so they tied up in a little bow so straightforward

⏹️ ▶️ John one

⏹️ ▶️ John, Casey later

⏹️ ▶️ John, Marco emails

⏹️ ▶️ John and it’s like all right now wait wait for it wait for it

⏹️ ▶️ John, Marco and the next are yep

⏹️ ▶️ Marco and in fact josh fenton the lawyer who wrote the first one wrote to me earlier today i think i think he didn’t

⏹️ ▶️ Marco copy the feedback address but he wrote to me earlier today saying basically he wanted to correct this

⏹️ ▶️ Marco that he made a mistake in not telling us that apparently

⏹️ ▶️ Marco this does not apply to product defect cases in california

⏹️ ▶️ Marco so

⏹️ ▶️ Marco, John yeah there’s

⏹️ ▶️ Marco definitely there definitely is no reason for apple to come out and say we’ve fixed

⏹️ ▶️ Marco it because it sucked before a cause that could be a problem for them

⏹️ ▶️ Casey oh man that’s funny

Follow-up: Intel 10nm update

⏹️ ▶️ Casey and finally since we only added days where the follow up to accumulate is

⏹️ ▶️ Casey a non tech i think that’s how you pronounce it i hope a has an article wherein they state until

⏹️ ▶️ Casey ten animate production update systems will be on shelves for holiday twenty twenty

⏹️ ▶️ Casey nineteen so no time soon

⏹️ ▶️ John i read that headline and i started reading the article my oh to find out when this thing is going and i

⏹️ ▶️ John realized like midway through the article wait that says twenty nineteen i thought it was going to be

⏹️ ▶️ John like well you know we’re in summer now and by the time winter comes they’ll just be you know they’ll just be getting out their first

⏹️ ▶️ John ten animated chips and then maybe apple will have them in the new year and then i go wait a second we’re

⏹️ ▶️ John in twenty eighteen now they mean next winter and that means that apple won’t have anything

⏹️ ▶️ John with them in it probably until twenty twenty so not look assuming they hit all

⏹️ ▶️ John these tarts not looking great for

⏹️ ▶️ Marco intel and by the way intel even even when intel is working normally

⏹️ ▶️ Marco even before this fourteen animator stall that they’ve had here they still never hit their deadlines

⏹️ ▶️ Marco in fact that like if they’re saying after this massive problem they’ve had they’re saying

⏹️ ▶️ Marco by holiday twenty nineteen what that really means is spring twenty twenty at best

⏹️ ▶️ John if they’re lucky and as many i think we pointed the down on last show but we’ve got more people reiterating it like

⏹️ ▶️ John so a taiwan semiconductor it has their seven anime in process working right now

⏹️ ▶️ John right now it’s working yeah and and yes it’s about the same as intel’s ten and yada

⏹️ ▶️ John yada yada but it’s just this is bad this is really bad

⏹️ ▶️ Marco like and apparently were like this winter’s or this fall’s iphone is probably going

⏹️ ▶️ Marco to have processors made on that process right

⏹️ ▶️ John, Marco mhm

⏹️ ▶️ John yeah that’s that’s the expectation and that’s you know then boy what a what the hell the

⏹️ ▶️ John benchmarks going to look like you know we need to keep revisiting geekbench and see you

⏹️ ▶️ John know the

⏹️ ▶️ John, Casey successor

⏹️ ▶️ John to the iphone ten and the iphone eight with its a twelve system on a chip in it will

⏹️ ▶️ John it be faster than all of apple’s laptops i

⏹️ ▶️ John, Marco know

⏹️ ▶️ John it’s going to be bad

Infinite timescale: ARM Macs

⏹️ ▶️ Marco so i’m curious you know just like ball parking here on

⏹️ ▶️ Marco a john syracuse patented infinite time scale

⏹️ ▶️ Casey i

⏹️ ▶️ Marco think we can probably all agree that on an infinite time scale max will probably

⏹️ ▶️ Marco not be using intel processors anymore they i probably will have switched to apple created a

⏹️ ▶️ Marco armed ships at some point right or they will cease to exist that’s the other right okay but one of

⏹️ ▶️ Marco those things on the assuming max continue to exist into infinity which i know

⏹️ ▶️ Marco is wrong but just for the sake of the of the thought exercise max you know will max eventually

⏹️ ▶️ Marco switched to arm chips over infinite time

⏹️ ▶️ John specifically switching the arm chips i don’t know like we keep getting all the fan mail from the people who are into i’m

⏹️ ▶️ John going to forget what it is do you guys remember like the other sort of arm ish risk architecture that’s

⏹️ ▶️ John like open source

⏹️ ▶️ Marco now open source hardware has not done very well in the mobile era

⏹️ ▶️ John it’s like a risk and then like a roman numeral or a letter anyway arm

⏹️ ▶️ John seems like the safe bet again if you are you know placing money on on them leaving until

⏹️ ▶️ John going to something arm seems like the safe bet because risk risk v i don’t know if it’s a five or v the

⏹️ ▶️ John charm says anyway um that they would go to arm but something like an open source instruction

⏹️ ▶️ John set or an apple proprietary structure set would be talking about that on a past show ah those

⏹️ ▶️ John are strong like second and third choices right so arm is the obvious

⏹️ ▶️ John one and but but i don’t i don’t think it’s a slam dunk like because apple doesn’t own arm i mean they

⏹️ ▶️ John they could just buy arm if they want to do i suppose i don’t think they have much reason to well there is

⏹️ ▶️ John a little bit i mean so they they have an architecture license and they can kind of do what they want but it really

⏹️ ▶️ John kind of flies in the face of owning control all the most important technologies data so yes they are making their

⏹️ ▶️ John own stuff but at a certain point arm has a certain amount you know arm

⏹️ ▶️ John has a certain amount of power over them not that they’re going to crank up their prices or whatever but it’s kind of like a google map situation

⏹️ ▶️ John it’s like you know i’m sure everyone’s happy as long as they’re happy but they make

⏹️ ▶️ John, Casey you know

⏹️ ▶️ John if arm makes a wrong move their own directions like apples like we’ll drop you in a second we can make an arm like thing

⏹️ ▶️ John in two seconds or you know or we’ll just buy you like don’t even try it don’t even think about it so i am as smart they’d

⏹️ ▶️ John just be super nice and careful with that but you know as the obvious

⏹️ ▶️ John choice but i don’t i wouldn’t you know i wouldn’t count out i think there’s a strong second and third choice of some other architecture

⏹️ ▶️ John or apples on architecture

⏹️ ▶️ Marco all right so let’s let’s modify the question and so on an infinite time scale can we agree that

⏹️ ▶️ Marco assuming max continue to exist they will probably switch away from intel to an apple

⏹️ ▶️ Marco controlled or apple created architecture

⏹️ ▶️ John an architecture where apple designs the chips yes yes yeah yeah casey

⏹️ ▶️ Casey oh i think absolutely i think it’s only a matter of

⏹️ ▶️ Marco time okay so now same question ten year time frame yeah

⏹️ ▶️ John i think so john it right now it’s looking pretty strong like right now

⏹️ ▶️ John i would say yes but things change pretty quickly and if intel like

⏹️ ▶️ John you know this this is just one generation we’re talking about so say intel blows it for ten animator

⏹️ ▶️ John and it’s a big problem and they’re really late but apple decides to tough it out you know it’s

⏹️ ▶️ John getting progressively harder each shrink right and and that road is going to end eventually to we talk about the end

⏹️ ▶️ John of morse law in the past episode so it could be that if apple decides to tough it out and in the

⏹️ ▶️ John next round intel is back ahead of everyone else for whatever reason they make all the right choices where here where

⏹️ ▶️ John previously they made all the wrong choices that would push the time rising over ten years so i don’t think it’s a slam dunk but i

⏹️ ▶️ John would give it you know coin toss

⏹️ ▶️ Marco i would say at a ten year time interval i would say they are probably not

⏹️ ▶️ Marco using intel chips any more and when i say until i’m also including other eighty six licenses which is you

⏹️ ▶️ Marco know m d right now and probably no other ones ever again so anyway so i’m saying no intel

⏹️ ▶️ Marco m d processor in mac in in current model mac

⏹️ ▶️ Marco in ten years what about five

⏹️ ▶️ Casey years you know it’s funny you say that because as you were asking this question of john i was

⏹️ ▶️ Casey thinking to myself when do i think it would happen

⏹️ ▶️ Marco or even just like when what is the time interval at which it becomes

⏹️ ▶️ Marco likely to be the case that they’ll drop into by how many years does it become more

⏹️ ▶️ Marco likely than not

⏹️ ▶️ Casey yeah and that’s obviously really hard to say but to put things in perspective i thought to myself

⏹️ ▶️ Casey you know what you should say that you would take the bet that it would i think it will be in

⏹️ ▶️ Casey the next five years but then the second thought i had is that every time i bet anyone just a friendly wager on anything i

⏹️ ▶️ Casey always end up losing so that means that it cannot be in the next five years because i’m confident

⏹️ ▶️ Casey it probably will be but um but i think if i were to wait your a guess i think between

⏹️ ▶️ Casey five and ten years is when i would sitting here today expect it to happen but that’s based only

⏹️ ▶️ Casey on sticking my thumb in the wind and very little else

⏹️ ▶️ John i think it really depends like it’s it’s it’s lumpy like it depends on if the ten animator thing

⏹️ ▶️ John is enough like if the twenty twenty apple arm rumors are true and the ten animator thing

⏹️ ▶️ John is enough to get them you know like it’ll be earlier than five years right it’ll be twenty twenty as the rumors say right

⏹️ ▶️ John because if this is if this is what finally breaks the relationship this current run of crappies

⏹️ ▶️ John ah then i feel like you’re not going to make it to five years but if you make it to five years suddenly the odds

⏹️ ▶️ John of you making it to ten go up because that means that they were going to ride out the ten animator storm and that maybe

⏹️ ▶️ John the next you know intel does okay with the next one right so i feel like it’s it’s not the parables aren’t

⏹️ ▶️ John evenly distributed like if twenty twenty comes and goes with no hint

⏹️ ▶️ John of an arm transition it’s probably going to see like apple decide they’re just going to ride this out write and come out

⏹️ ▶️ John the other side you know until ten and i will be fine and everything like that and of course there’s still the macpro problem

⏹️ ▶️ John you know that we have to talk about anything like that if they make it a couple years into this suddenly i think their

⏹️ ▶️ John odds of making a ten go up but i i have no problem believing the

⏹️ ▶️ John vaguely sourced twenty twenty arm rumors right so it’s a slightly

⏹️ ▶️ John different probability curve

⏹️ ▶️ Marco now since we’re getting into short time horizons i think we have to separate into two questions question

⏹️ ▶️ Marco number one is when does the first arm mac get released and question number two is when

⏹️ ▶️ Marco does the last intel mac get released

⏹️ ▶️ John i would think they would do the transition kind of the same way they’ve done all their other transitions like they haven’t

⏹️ ▶️ John really the overlap period hasn’t been particularly long in most of the transitions i know

⏹️ ▶️ John that the wild card factor is the tim cook overlap deal where where you know the tim cook’s apple loves

⏹️ ▶️ John to just keep selling the old one for ever and ever and that could play into the transition but i don’t think that’s

⏹️ ▶️ Marco i’m not saying when will they stop selling the last intel mackage when will the last intel mac be released

⏹️ ▶️ Marco yeah cause they’ll keep selling it for ten years later it’ll be the mac in and they’ll keep selling forever i

⏹️ ▶️ John don’t think they’ll sell them new for that long i’m hoping they won’t sell them new for that long um yeah i don’t

⏹️ ▶️ John think they’ll be that that big of an overlap because they really just want to get these transitions over with for this type of transition

⏹️ ▶️ John they used to be they wanted to get all transitions over with really fast but that ship sailed a long time ago but things like

⏹️ ▶️ John this that’s developer facing i feel like they’re gonna wanna yeah like why would you why would you

⏹️ ▶️ John keep them around right there’s there’s so much incentive to take the macbook are for example the mac that just won’t die

⏹️ ▶️ John right there’s tremendous incentive to switch that to harm if they switch to arm right like it just

⏹️ ▶️ John forget about that it’s old and creaky and slow like it will be so much better even if they just rip out the guts

⏹️ ▶️ John and keep the case still keep the case the same still have a non retina

⏹️ ▶️ John, Casey crappy screen

⏹️ ▶️ John on it you put arm in that thing the battery life would be really good and the cost

⏹️ ▶️ John would go down and just

⏹️ ▶️ Marco yeah one that doesn’t solve problems they have in that lineup it’s already pretty inexpensive and

⏹️ ▶️ Marco the better life is great

⏹️ ▶️ John but

⏹️ ▶️ John, Marco it would be so

⏹️ ▶️ John much better and so much cheaper like how that intel versus how much it costs them what

⏹️ ▶️ John it is like the the eleven system on a chip which is probably about faster or as fast as

⏹️ ▶️ John what’s in the macbook air now a impulse single and multicore that costs him like a five or

⏹️ ▶️ John ten bucks or something and the intel cp is like in the hundreds it’s ridiculous

⏹️ ▶️ Marco yeah actually it’s funny like there actually is a profit margin for them or a profit motive

⏹️ ▶️ Marco rather for them to switch to their own ships because they’d be a lot cheaper

⏹️ ▶️ Marco, John i

⏹️ ▶️ Marco mean even if you even if you include their fixed costs of designing each one they’re probably still way cheaper

⏹️ ▶️ Marco than buying them from intel because intel chips are not yet

⏹️ ▶️ John and they get to spread the cost of developing them especially in the laptop line unlike look we’re making these chips for the for

⏹️ ▶️ John the phones anyway and it’s not too far a stretch to go from the phone to a laptop

⏹️ ▶️ John figuring out how to get your money back for the uh the mac pro and the imac pro arm chip that’s

⏹️ ▶️ John a little bit trickier but i guess they just charge five thousand dollars and who knows how much the mac pro will cost and that’s how

⏹️ ▶️ John they make that money

⏹️ ▶️ Marco up casey when do you so when do you think the first arm

⏹️ ▶️ Marco mac will be released like how many years from now i

⏹️ ▶️ Casey think it’ll be in the next five years again based on nothing but gut i

⏹️ ▶️ Casey think it’ll be sooner than we think i think it’ll be sometime in the next five years we’ll see

⏹️ ▶️ Casey the first one where the first one appears i’m not sure i’m currently inclined

⏹️ ▶️ Casey to say it would be the macbook air you know mac adorable part of the lineup something

⏹️ ▶️ Casey portable something well the mac adorable is not cheap but you know what i mean like the the low powered

⏹️ ▶️ Casey portable i think it’ll be in the next five years somewhere in that part of the of

⏹️ ▶️ Casey the range i don’t see it being like oh we have a brand new mac pro and guess what it’s all arm

⏹️ ▶️ Casey you know i just don’t think that would happen i don’t think you know the fifteen inch macpro would get it i think

⏹️ ▶️ Casey it would be an adorable or air or something new that replaces both one or both of those

⏹️ ▶️ Casey probably close to five years from now but within the next five years

⏹️ ▶️ Marco john when is the first arm mac

⏹️ ▶️ John is that the same question as when they will switch to arm

⏹️ ▶️ Marco no why

⏹️ ▶️ John, Marco is it not

⏹️ ▶️ Marco like how many years from now do you think the first arm mac will be released

⏹️ ▶️ John as that’s the question i was answering with the transition like i feel i feel like you know when i was saying that i believe the twenty

⏹️ ▶️ John twenty rumor is plausible that twenty twenty would be the first arm back shipping or when i say that if they go

⏹️ ▶️ John past five years then suddenly ten years becomes better because they prove they’re going to stick it out for ten and maybe until those

⏹️ ▶️ John better the next size down right then whatever you know twenty twenty eight

⏹️ ▶️ John or whatever would be all right so it’s the same as my other question i don’t i don’t see the distinction between when does

⏹️ ▶️ John the first versus when do they switch

⏹️ ▶️ Marco all right so you syracuse of the question all right i’m going to say i’m going to say the first

⏹️ ▶️ Marco mac is i’m going to go a little dress i’m going to say it within two years

⏹️ ▶️ Casey oh that is bold

⏹️ ▶️ Marco i think they can do it that’s that’s the twenty twenty thing right that’s within two years yeah and i think they

⏹️ ▶️ Marco it might even be faster than that i mean i probably not but i think within two years is somewhat likely

⏹️ ▶️ Marco if not more likely than not that they that the first arm mac will be released and i agree

⏹️ ▶️ Marco with both of you know i think they would they would start the low end cause that would be the easiest ones to basically just take like the

⏹️ ▶️ Marco same trip that goes on an ipad and and put it in the you know the smallest macbook whatever it was called at that point

⏹️ ▶️ Marco that that i think would be a no brainer

⏹️ ▶️ Marco, John as for one

⏹️ ▶️ Marco of the last mac would be released or the last intel mac sorry

⏹️ ▶️ Marco i would say that’s most likely to happen within so if i’m saying two years is when this transition

⏹️ ▶️ Marco starts i think modern apple considering the mac line there’s no way in hell

⏹️ ▶️ Marco a complete transition in a short time this is a long painful transition just like retina

⏹️ ▶️ Marco and just like ssd and i’m thinking that this transition happens over the course of probably three

⏹️ ▶️ Marco years so i’m going to say first arm mac in about two years last intel

⏹️ ▶️ Marco mac in about five years

⏹️ ▶️ John i really think the pro line is the thing that yeah i know as i was alluding to it like how long does it take for them to go

⏹️ ▶️ John as all read i like and they still haven’t done it but i really think the pro line

⏹️ ▶️ John is more likely to drag them out rather than just like laziness because

⏹️ ▶️ John it could be again especially if they’re on the accelerated timeline of like twenty twenty they

⏹️ ▶️ John just haven’t had time to replace the zion with anything and they’re just fine with saying okay well the

⏹️ ▶️ John proline is going to be in tall until we can make a chip that can deal with zeon till we can

⏹️ ▶️ John you not like that’s that’s so much less of a priority than all the other things that they build and so

⏹️ ▶️ John much more complicated than reusing and slightly enhancing phone ships

⏹️ ▶️ John that those would be the ones to linger that it’s like we haven’t gotten around to it pro users don’t care

⏹️ ▶️ John anyway in fact pro users don’t like architecture transitions got to rebuy software and crap and things aren’t optimized for

⏹️ ▶️ John it and so those things will just linger and you know three to five years

⏹️ ▶️ John even where it’s like when is apple going to replace those things in the high end as the low end slowly creeps up on it

⏹️ ▶️ John in performance or whatever although here’s a question about the the low end ones so say they

⏹️ ▶️ John go on on you know the laptops and stuff the magma pros

⏹️ ▶️ John have a tee two in them which is like a tennis thing did these laptops

⏹️ ▶️ John end up shipping with two arm processors one doing all the

⏹️ ▶️ John ssd encryption and the hiding stuff

⏹️ ▶️ Marco and why not i mean iphone share with the motion co processor thing plus the main

⏹️ ▶️ Marco co processor

⏹️ ▶️ Marco, John right that’s already you know that’s already seven

⏹️ ▶️ John m seven is tiny and weak and the a ten is not a weak right so

⏹️ ▶️ John it starts to look a little bit silly to have an a twelve and a ten inside the case well that’s the system

⏹️ ▶️ John see you and this one does touch id drive encryption and hey dingus that seems like

⏹️ ▶️ John could you just could you make like a could you do it all on one arm chip that’s a little bit

⏹️ ▶️ John bigger or would you would you shrink down i don’t know if you can shrink down the tito maybe it’s as powerful as it needs

⏹️ ▶️ John to be it would be interesting to see what that architecture looks like they could do they could certainly

⏹️ ▶️ John make a single even larger system on a chip that handles all those functions just as different execution units and different

⏹️ ▶️ John things inside be interesting

⏹️ ▶️ Casey i think that the deli delineation between the two would end up being somewhat synthetic

⏹️ ▶️ Casey and what i mean by that is i think perhaps to start it would you know literally be an a ten or you

⏹️ ▶️ Casey know whatever approximate equivalent thereof in addition to the main cpu

⏹️ ▶️ Casey but it wouldn’t surprise me if within a couple of years you know it it is just one system on a chip

⏹️ ▶️ Casey that has a completely separate subunit subsection you know or

⏹️ ▶️ Casey something else that that handles the stuff the t two handles and even though it’s on you know

⏹️ ▶️ Casey one i can’t think of the term looking for not a pc b but you know it’s it may physically be one unit

⏹️ ▶️ Casey with one socket but internal to that unit i think this is what you are saying john it has like two

⏹️ ▶️ Casey very different and i don’t want to say cores but very different pieces that only interconnect in

⏹️ ▶️ Casey certain ways much like the t two is with the intel processor but obviously those are

⏹️ ▶️ Casey not the same unit it would be you know this kind of synthetic delineation where it’s all in the same socket

⏹️ ▶️ Casey but it’s doing two completely different things and can only talk in certain ways because that’s kind of the whole point of this is keeping

⏹️ ▶️ Casey them separated you know you gotta keep em separated

⏹️ ▶️ Casey, John i was thinking they’d all be on the same

⏹️ ▶️ John die just because they’d have so much more

⏹️ ▶️ John, Casey that’s

⏹️ ▶️ Casey what i was looking for thank you thank you there you go i don’t

⏹️ ▶️ John think they do they still do the multi day packages isn’t still have any as i haven’t been keeping up i don’t

⏹️ ▶️ Marco i don’t know if i think apple does though it’s because don’t they don’t they put like ram and stuff in the same package

⏹️ ▶️ Marco as the cp and everything but i don’t think it’s on the same die

⏹️ ▶️ Casey so what happens to thunderbolt then because i only we have lightly paid attention to this and and i

⏹️ ▶️ Casey know that recently and actually the chat room was just talking about this the sort of kind of open

⏹️ ▶️ Casey source thunder intel sort of kind of open source thunderbolt in it and as far as i knew it was intel and apple that

⏹️ ▶️ Casey kind of where we were the people who built thunderbolt or or whatever

⏹️ ▶️ Casey how does that work on a non intel cp or their problem and i’m genuinely asking like is that a problem

⏹️ ▶️ Casey with an mcp would that work or would they have to go something else

⏹️ ▶️ John not a problem that money can’t solve i mean this is related to like so say insult say apple

⏹️ ▶️ John does leave intel intel obviously doesn’t want apple to leave them they they make money off of them they’re good customer

⏹️ ▶️ John they buy expensive intel parts and you know whatever intel also

⏹️ ▶️ John wants more of all sorts of other kinds of business in a some intel was very happy about apples

⏹️ ▶️ John spat with cal com and apple’s reportedly not going to use call on chips at

⏹️ ▶️ John all and its next round of phone products which is you know that’s a lot of money and what are they going to use instead

⏹️ ▶️ John as far as we know intel is the only alternative of course apple’s making its own radio chips eventually too but i’m not sure if that’s

⏹️ ▶️ John going to happen this year but so intel still wants to make money from apple could they you know

⏹️ ▶️ John it’s not like he’s going to say well if you’re not going to use our sup use won’t sell you anything what they say instead is please

⏹️ ▶️ John buy our modems right please please buy our colons which by the way someone wrote in to tell us that

⏹️ ▶️ John intel actually does use t smc as a fab because intel can’t do analog stuff so all their radio

⏹️ ▶️ John chips are fab by tsmc which i think is fun um but like intel

⏹️ ▶️ John alto wants to sell them something so you can make a deal with intel and combine like the thunderbolt

⏹️ ▶️ John licensing and dealing with all that intellectual property and throw in there that you’re going to get to make the

⏹️ ▶️ John the cell radio chips for the next two lines of iphones or whatever like a deal

⏹️ ▶️ John can be made an arrangement can be come to and yet money money will solve this problem no problem

⏹️ ▶️ John like there is intel is not going to hold a grudge and turn down apple’s money apple has a lot of money so i feel like

⏹️ ▶️ John thunderbolt is not an issue that i mean i’m sure if you control the money apple you

⏹️ ▶️ John have to deal with it and finesse that relationship but boy amount of money can solve a lot of problems

⏹️ ▶️ Marco thunderbolt matters a little bit today a few years ago thunderbolt didn’t matter

⏹️ ▶️ Marco at all a few years from now it’s logical to think that thunderbolt might not matter

⏹️ ▶️ Marco then because something else will matter you know there there is a need for there to be these

⏹️ ▶️ Marco you know nice high bandwidth high speed ports on computers pretty much all the time for things like

⏹️ ▶️ Marco high speed storage externally you know monitor connections externally stuff like that but

⏹️ ▶️ Marco it doesn’t need to be thunderbolt it can be something else you know apple can use can use u s b

⏹️ ▶️ Marco they can use and they can invent their own thing they could you know pick you back on someone else’s standard bricks is more likely what

⏹️ ▶️ Marco they would do there are lots of things you can’t you can’t say like oh they can’t make this laptop because it doesn’t

⏹️ ▶️ Marco have thunderbolt i mean hell already the macbook doesn’t have thunderbolt like already they already sell

⏹️ ▶️ Marco laptop that thunderbolt and they sell just fine technology moves what is relevant today what you

⏹️ ▶️ Marco think is required today is not necessarily what what’s going to be required by tomorrow’s max

⏹️ ▶️ Casey makes sense i

⏹️ ▶️ Marco mean health under bolt already today is everywhere and almost no one cares almost no one ever uses it

⏹️ ▶️ Marco the vast majority of the time those thunderbolt ports on those laptops are being used to take power in or send

⏹️ ▶️ Marco power out while other also

⏹️ ▶️ John used to deal with the lack of ports like this the magi

⏹️ ▶️ John, Casey under

⏹️ ▶️ John balls like all these people with thunderbolt docks that is essentially their one port docking station to make up for the design of

⏹️ ▶️ John laptops the laptops had more ports than the thunderbolt would be less important by apple making the choices it has

⏹️ ▶️ John made thunderbolt actually i think is more important than it would than it would normally be for a lot of magma

⏹️ ▶️ John pro owners yeah

⏹️ ▶️ Marco that’s fair actually but again like you know there are other standards that could come along that will come along you know

⏹️ ▶️ Marco thunderbolt won’t be the port that everyone cares about assuming everyone ever does forever

⏹️ ▶️ Marco like that it’s just it’s the port that we have this year and we’ve had it for a few years before

⏹️ ▶️ Marco this and we’ll probably have it for a few years after this and then we’ll use something else and that something else could be something apple

⏹️ ▶️ Marco move with square space

⏹️ ▶️ Casey we’ve had this in the show notes for a couple of months at least and this

⏹️ ▶️ Casey went around very briefly i guess it was in may nick here writes

⏹️ ▶️ Casey i think that apple’s increasingly austere take on industrial design has made them better shipping products that feel almost

⏹️ ▶️ Casey invisible i appreciate that it reduces the hardware to a tool not but not an appliance yet i think apple’s

⏹️ ▶️ Casey products feel even more approachable than they used to because so much of what they make is entirely straightforward

⏹️ ▶️ Casey they don’t need to mask the complexity of the software with the layer of gum drop plastic in many ways softwares become simple

⏹️ ▶️ Casey enough that the hardware can reflect that and this was kind of summarized

⏹️ ▶️ Casey as most especially by m j si what happened to apple’s wimsey

⏹️ ▶️ Casey and a gentleman by the name of marco arment commented on this via twitter he said it tragically passed

⏹️ ▶️ Casey away in twenty eleven we all really miss it so what happened to apple’s wimsey marco

⏹️ ▶️ Casey when did it go away you

⏹️ ▶️ John just quoted him telling you when i have a better question what are your as relatively

⏹️ ▶️ John new mac users what are your memory what is like when you think about whimsy or

⏹️ ▶️ John fun or things related to like that that type of thing with apple what comes to mind like what’s your earliest memory

⏹️ ▶️ John of knowing that the mac was a you know sort of

⏹️ ▶️ John whimsical fun delightful experience

⏹️ ▶️ Casey well i can absolutely murder you by telling you the first thing that jumps to mind is the ipod

⏹️ ▶️ Casey and

⏹️ ▶️ Casey, Marco it

⏹️ ▶️ Casey had nothing to do with max at all which which i know makes you deeply upset but i mean it i mean i was

⏹️ ▶️ Casey aware of max had used max off and on growing up but i mean they always seemed like

⏹️ ▶️ Casey i don’t know the thing that those other people used and i don’t know what other people means in this context may be smarter

⏹️ ▶️ Casey maybe more attractive maybe weird maybe nerds i don’t know but not me is what i

⏹️ ▶️ Casey knew and and it wasn’t until the i pod almost an ipod

⏹️ ▶️ Casey it wasn’t till the ipod that i started paying attention and i remember and i think i told the story relatively

⏹️ ▶️ Casey recently the first ipod nano was i think the first apple product i ever owned

⏹️ ▶️ Casey and i lost it after that thing so hard and i just couldn’t believe

⏹️ ▶️ Casey something so small could do so many things and

⏹️ ▶️ Casey hold so much music and be so good to use and so fun to you use and

⏹️ ▶️ Casey that is my first memory of just being truly and deeply impressed by apple because obviously

⏹️ ▶️ Casey ipods had existed for a while at that point but i never was really that interested in them they were big they were clunky

⏹️ ▶️ Casey they i mean they had hard drives actual hard drives in them but once the nano

⏹️ ▶️ Casey came around that was the beginning of the end or maybe the beginning of the beginning what

⏹️ ▶️ Casey with regard to my relationship with apple

⏹️ ▶️ John i didn’t mean to narrow to mac you know i sometimes say mac instead of apple

⏹️ ▶️ John, Casey that’s

⏹️ ▶️ John what i’m thinking about but but but what about what about them was whimsical what about them was playful

⏹️ ▶️ Marco i mean for me it was the sleep led on the mac

⏹️ ▶️ Marco, Casey oh that’s my my first mac

⏹️ ▶️ Marco was a powerbook for and i and there were there’s a lot of that machine that was very delightful

⏹️ ▶️ Marco i mean there’s so much of it that was just incredibly cool and nice i mean

⏹️ ▶️ Marco part of it was you know features of os ten like you know much to the chagrin of old night people i love

⏹️ ▶️ Marco things like the genie effect i

⏹️ ▶️ Marco, John was just about to say that of my head

⏹️ ▶️ John into the chagrin of old mac people everybody loved the genia

⏹️ ▶️ Marco fell a lot of people thought that was like cheese and stuff but anyway

⏹️ ▶️ John i

⏹️ ▶️ Casey thought the same as you

⏹️ ▶️ John now ever everybody loved the genie fact we only listen to go watch the the presentation when he showed

⏹️ ▶️ John it us in oh

⏹️ ▶️ Marco yeah yeah like you know mac the mac os itself had a bunch of you know

⏹️ ▶️ Marco software whimsy to it like that wasn’t just something to to serve a function

⏹️ ▶️ Marco that was something that was like you know animation decoration basically it was like it was like

⏹️ ▶️ Marco dessert like this is unnecessary flourish but it’s delightful to make people smile um

⏹️ ▶️ Marco that you know it actually served anti function it made it slower to minimize windows but we did it anyway because it was

⏹️ ▶️ Marco it was cool the sleep belly though was was interesting because it was like here’s a simple detail of this

⏹️ ▶️ Marco product that is that has been very like overly

⏹️ ▶️ Marco designed to serve again to overly designed to serve no like

⏹️ ▶️ Marco bullet point or like feature checklist function like does it have a sleep belly d yes

⏹️ ▶️ Marco like you know making it do the pulsing thing so it looks like it’s breathing serves no

⏹️ ▶️ Marco purpose except to make people think it’s cool and to make people smile and that

⏹️ ▶️ Marco that to me is kind of like the the heart of i think what this question is

⏹️ ▶️ Marco asking about what a lot of us feel is missing in a lot of the you know recent things

⏹️ ▶️ Marco from apple is not necessarily the exact same things with the exact same styles of

⏹️ ▶️ Marco things but those little details that were done

⏹️ ▶️ Marco that would make you smile about how it would give you the little a

⏹️ ▶️ Marco little moment of delight and they would be totally unnecessary and serve

⏹️ ▶️ Marco no like marketable or checklist item feature value at all

⏹️ ▶️ Marco but were just cool and would make you think wow this thing is cool i love this

⏹️ ▶️ Marco thing and like that’s what got us into this platform that’s what got us

⏹️ ▶️ Marco all loving apple products so much it’s stuff like that it’s details like that that would just give us the little moments of delight

⏹️ ▶️ Casey so let me give you a brief counter argument what about mimo ji then i mean

⏹️ ▶️ Casey is that not whimsical in the animoji

⏹️ ▶️ Casey, John that preceded

⏹️ ▶️ John them we haven’t gotten to to debating whether apple’s whimsey has departed or decreased or

⏹️ ▶️ John what the cyclone is i was just trying to think back like what you know what was your first experience with it and what do you remember as whimsy

⏹️ ▶️ John because i think it’s different depending on when you came in to apple you might have different answers especially if the question is

⏹️ ▶️ John is apple more whimsical now than it was in the past you your your base line both of you is around the same time is

⏹️ ▶️ John that whatever that level of whimsy was the ah you know well i guess well you didn’t

⏹️ ▶️ John get a chance to answer casey but like what what about the nano was whimsical the colors was it that it was you

⏹️ ▶️ John know cute ah

⏹️ ▶️ Casey no i think it was the i guess the cuteness i don’t know how to verbalize

⏹️ ▶️ Casey it um it was just the first thing it was the first thing that apple made that

⏹️ ▶️ Casey looked like it was really and truly fun and maybe without

⏹️ ▶️ Casey compromise cause an admittedly i’m you know recalling something that i had what was it

⏹️ ▶️ Casey like fourteen years ago but my recollection was that there was almost no compromise involved like it

⏹️ ▶️ Casey was tiny the battery lasted a really long time it worked with windows which at the time was important

⏹️ ▶️ Casey to me it held a whole bunch of music or more way more than anything i had

⏹️ ▶️ Casey at the time and so it was something that was fun to look at fun to hold

⏹️ ▶️ Casey fun to use and was basically without compromise and i think

⏹️ ▶️ Casey well i was going to say early on i phones were the same way but no that’s not true at all they had plenty of compromises so i don’t

⏹️ ▶️ Casey know i guess that’s the best way i can describe it is that it was without compromise but you also have not answered the question john

⏹️ ▶️ Casey like what was your first

⏹️ ▶️ John i’m starting to think casey is immune to whimsey but then again he was a pc user for a really long time and

⏹️ ▶️ John always two user so there may have been some permanent damage done at some point and an i b

⏹️ ▶️ John m kid so boy yeah the deck was stacked against

⏹️ ▶️ John, Casey them if you haven’t

⏹️ ▶️ John really described i mean marco accurately described the thing

⏹️ ▶️ John, Casey you’ve described just

⏹️ ▶️ John for the first apple product that definitely attracted you to it but maybe not the most whimsical

⏹️ ▶️ John but

⏹️ ▶️ John, Casey anyway i was asking if i was

⏹️ ▶️ John asking about early

⏹️ ▶️ John, Casey appearances

⏹️ ▶️ John because like for people who are saying like oh apple has lost it its whimsy they’re comparing it to some point in

⏹️ ▶️ John the past where they remember it being more whimsical and you know so my answer to this like you

⏹️ ▶️ John know backing to the same question of like early memories whatever is that again the there’s

⏹️ ▶️ John some word for this but i forgot the the curse of old age right so i’ve been

⏹️ ▶️ John using apple for so long that it’s not just like there was the old times and the new times

⏹️ ▶️ John as many many cycles that we’ve been to so i’ve seen the cycle of apple wimsey

⏹️ ▶️ John oscillate a few times back and forth so the current the current movement in whimsey is just is

⏹️ ▶️ John viewed in that context and i have to compare to like are we really swinging so far away you know

⏹️ ▶️ John are we in the deepest valley ever or this is just another valley and thinking back

⏹️ ▶️ John it always seemed to me that and maybe this is to get us to the topic of you know how things have changed

⏹️ ▶️ John in recent years that apple’s hardware whimsey has oscillated a

⏹️ ▶️ John lot um and it never got

⏹️ ▶️ John really really high until the job’s too our until the imac and the

⏹️ ▶️ John colours and branching out in different kinds of hardware that i feel like was the strongest

⏹️ ▶️ John swing the hardware has made toward whimsey obviously we’re very far away from

⏹️ ▶️ John that peak now right you know with the candy colored imacs and everything and now everything is you know glass

⏹️ ▶️ John and steel um not glass and steel glass and aluminum ah but there’s still

⏹️ ▶️ John a lot of it there but the software

⏹️ ▶️ John had always car had never gone through a particularly deep valley from the very beginning of the mac

⏹️ ▶️ John you turn the thing on and a little happy face on the computer that you’re looking at comes on the screen for the very first thing that appears

⏹️ ▶️ John on the screen or even just like the floppy disk with the blinking question mark software

⏹️ ▶️ John has been the way that apple has expressed the way the whimsey of apple has come through most strongly

⏹️ ▶️ John and no matter what happened to the hardware even when it was all the snow white design language and we had the macos i thing

⏹️ ▶️ John and everything was pin stripes and and button up and businesslike or whatever the software was still

⏹️ ▶️ John entirely fun and playful and the seedy player came in different colors for no reason and balloon

⏹️ ▶️ John help was in there these little you know cartoon speech balloons and the control strip strip looked

⏹️ ▶️ John like a little zipper and slipped in and out that was sort of like the

⏹️ ▶️ John the heart and soul of apple that software you couldn’t stop it back when people had names in the credits

⏹️ ▶️ John of the applications and they had fun about screens and there was easter eggs and there was a little flying iguana

⏹️ ▶️ John flag flapping in three deep like no matter what happened to the hardware the software was there and i

⏹️ ▶️ John feel like when the job’s too arrow there was this weird inversion where the hardware got very whimsical

⏹️ ▶️ John and playful and fun you know hugely so you had you had the cube you had the colors

⏹️ ▶️ John you had you know all the the ipod stuff just very very fun but the

⏹️ ▶️ John software you know macos ten a sided started to shift in the direction of being slightly

⏹️ ▶️ John less playful eye light was definitely playful and delightful and whimsical and so was the operating system

⏹️ ▶️ John but now look what has happened over the years all the eyelids stuff is way less playful than

⏹️ ▶️ John it used to be much more buttoned down and simple and austere or dead yeah the

⏹️ ▶️ John operating system which used to look like candy land right in the early days magasin is slowly slowly

⏹️ ▶️ John progressively gotten more flat more simple less garish right

⏹️ ▶️ John and i feel like this this this current you know the hope from the jobs to err

⏹️ ▶️ John until now has been has as seen the biggest the most whimsical hardware and the

⏹️ ▶️ John least whimsical software ever the personality of individual people does not come through in the software apple makes

⏹️ ▶️ John and the personality in aggregate is definitely more button down right up until

⏹️ ▶️ John i think this year with dark mode and accent colors is the first tick swing

⏹️ ▶️ John in the other direction of whimsical software the hardware if you look at

⏹️ ▶️ John all the hardware not just mac hardware it’s been hanging in there like they’re you know the

⏹️ ▶️ John the phones come in fun colors the watches all the watch straps or whatever there’s still plenty of fun to be

⏹️ ▶️ John had in the hardware so i don’t feel like we’re at like a really deep valley i just feel like we you know

⏹️ ▶️ John we’re not at the peak we were with the candy imacs but we’re not in a particular trough either unless

⏹️ ▶️ John you look at a particular thing like oh the macbook pros very super born why don’t they come in colors like the macbook does or whatever

⏹️ ▶️ John but the software i feel like really has been in a big downswing in recent years and is

⏹️ ▶️ John on the mac anyway just starting to pick up a little bit with a little bit more fun so

⏹️ ▶️ John i’m i’m not entirely on board with the idea that apple wimsey has disappeared and i think if you have that impression you

⏹️ ▶️ John may be focusing too closely on one particular aspect whether it’s just the hardware and just a particular

⏹️ ▶️ John product line or whatever like a like as you said or whatever brought up emoji if you

⏹️ ▶️ John look at a specific area apple can looks like its old self like look at this silly thing where we

⏹️ ▶️ John do these keynote things where you can put these weird emoji heads on our face and stick the tongue out stuff

⏹️ ▶️ John totally whimsical a hundred percent but if you look at the design of apple’s laptops especially the

⏹️ ▶️ John pro laptops are like they’re just boring and the same and even the phones if you don’t look at the back like that was one of the

⏹️ ▶️ John article that was linked to look i laid all these phones on the on the table they all look like black rectangles yeah flip them over

⏹️ ▶️ John people they make all sorts of cases with holes in them and shiny red things and

⏹️ ▶️ John yellow bumble bee stuff and all the you know it’s it’s it’s here it’s where

⏹️ ▶️ John you find it right they’re not going to put it on the screen the whole front of the thing is a screen but you know just look at the background that they

⏹️ ▶️ John have on the screen the animated backgrounds the weird different patterns and the lock screens that they put on there

⏹️ ▶️ John i’m not i do not subscribe to the theory that apples wimsey has disappeared and we’re in a giant trough i

⏹️ ▶️ John just think it is that it’s an oscillation and there was a big inversion between hardware and software

⏹️ ▶️ John at the start of the job’s two era but that i think we’re you know i think we’re just wiggling back to the

⏹️ ▶️ John normal average eventually

⏹️ ▶️ Casey i see what you’re saying i don’t know it it feels as though apple

⏹️ ▶️ Casey is growing up andor is is stepping into the

⏹️ ▶️ Casey shoes of the big guy you know they’re no longer they also

⏹️ ▶️ Casey ran they’re they’re they’re now the big the big hit on the block

⏹️ ▶️ Casey and it also just feels like more maturity that this analogy may make no sense

⏹️ ▶️ Casey but it’s the best i can think of when i was sixteen i

⏹️ ▶️ Casey had mostly used or been given my dad’s saturn sl two

⏹️ ▶️ Casey and if you follow us from all the way back in neutral this is the one where the wheel fell off when i was driving it what color

⏹️ ▶️ Casey was that one it was uh it was purple it was the weirdest thing but anyway

⏹️ ▶️ Casey the point is i actually this is not going to help my case we really should abandon this and beg you to cut

⏹️ ▶️ Casey this all out but i know you won’t anyway ah what i really wanted in the world is a sixteen year old all

⏹️ ▶️ Casey i wanted in the world is to change the gauges in the

⏹️ ▶️ Casey dash from a black background to a white background because i thought that that was so cool and god i hate myself

⏹️ ▶️ Casey for bringing this up right now because i’m just feeding into your into your whole thing marco but anyway i really

⏹️ ▶️ Casey wanted white gauges i just thought it looked so cool as a sixteen year old all i want in the world was white

⏹️ ▶️ Casey gauges and of course my dad who was an adult said no you’re not doing that that’s a stupid thing to do

⏹️ ▶️ Casey and he was right and i feel like that

⏹️ ▶️ Casey was the sixteen year old me whereas the thirty six year old me is horrified at the thought of

⏹️ ▶️ Casey doing that and and i think some of that is just growing up right and i think that’s

⏹️ ▶️ Casey a lot of what’s going on with apple and i think that some of it is like i was saying a moment ago they’re

⏹️ ▶️ Casey arguably the big player in the space now i mean granted not by like unit

⏹️ ▶️ Casey sales you know obviously there’s way way way more pcs than there are macs but it seems

⏹️ ▶️ Casey like the only people that are making any money for the most part is apple and the and

⏹️ ▶️ Casey and and the only the only manufacturer anyone’s really interested in is apple i mean

⏹️ ▶️ Casey yes i know their piece of users were very much into windows blah blah blah but even

⏹️ ▶️ Casey even amongst my friends and family that do not have mac it seems like nobody’s

⏹️ ▶️ Casey really a trendsetter except apple and so now they’re playing it much closer to the vest because they’re

⏹️ ▶️ Casey they’re the big guy now and they’re older now know hopefully that makes some amount of sense maybe it

⏹️ ▶️ Casey, John doesn’t

⏹️ ▶️ John i don’t buy that one though because apple has been a thought leader in design to use the lovely phrase

⏹️ ▶️ John, Casey for so long

⏹️ ▶️ John in fact they they they seized those reins by being extremely whimsical with hardware which

⏹️ ▶️ John is why our irons were all teal and translucent

⏹️ ▶️ John, Marco so

⏹️ ▶️ John like there they they do set the trends and directions but it doesn’t have to be away from

⏹️ ▶️ John whimsey it can be towards whimsey and and you know like i some people people who

⏹️ ▶️ John subscribe to the theory that apples wimsey has gone away have to look selectively look at everything you

⏹️ ▶️ John have to do with watchbands they’re the all they do is come up with

⏹️ ▶️ John fun things to do the watch bands blending into the background with the pride one with those little lines and everything is entirely

⏹️ ▶️ John whimsical like almost everything on the watch is whimsical because a lot of it’s just not functional it’s just about like hey when

⏹️ ▶️ John i see pictures of my kids or make mouse taps you know his foot or whatever

⏹️ ▶️ Marco like honestly i don’t disagree on the watch i strongly disagree on the watch well you’re thinking

⏹️ ▶️ Marco of the hardware design of the watch not the software though no no i’m thinking i think the watch is whimsy

⏹️ ▶️ Marco especially on the software side the software side of the watch is whimsy is almost as if samsung

⏹️ ▶️ Marco tried to be whimsical oh come on it’s not coherent there’s a whole lot of it

⏹️ ▶️ Marco that isn’t whimsical at all that isn’t even well designed or that isn’t very functional it doesn’t have to

⏹️ ▶️ John be well designed or coherent whimsy is the opposite of that is just something like you said something just done for the fun

⏹️ ▶️ John of it

⏹️ ▶️ Marco it’s like they’re it’s like they’re buying whimsy it’s like let’s pay disney have disney pays maybe who

⏹️ ▶️ Marco knows to have the you know the toy story characters or mickey mouse on there taps foot yea whimsy

⏹️ ▶️ Marco done meanwhile the whole rest of the watch you is you know not

⏹️ ▶️ John just because you don’t like it doesn’t mean it’s not whimsical

⏹️ ▶️ Casey yeah i’m with john i think your your mechanical watch i don’t want to use the word snobbery

⏹️ ▶️ Casey because that’s way more negative than i mean but your your preference for mechanical things that are

⏹️ ▶️ Casey considerably simpler and cleaner i think is clouding your opinion of the watching this

⏹️ ▶️ Casey, John i don’t

⏹️ ▶️ John think it has to do with the mechanical stuff i mean i agree that it’s incoherent i’m thinking particularly think of something that’s

⏹️ ▶️ John not functional and kind of incoherent but definitely whimsical that stupid honeycomb screen on the watch

⏹️ ▶️ John, Casey with the a

⏹️ ▶️ John that is entirely whimsy and looks cool and is fun but doesn’t work and is bad and they should get rid of it

⏹️ ▶️ John right so whimsy and goodness do not go together that’s true of a lot of things that have been whimsical

⏹️ ▶️ John with apple products over the years ah so you know and i was just thinking of the watch specifically

⏹️ ▶️ John but i get the backs of phones the fact they make the red ones the fact that they change the finishes right and and make the

⏹️ ▶️ John gold and the rose gold and and the shiny black and you know there’s only so much

⏹️ ▶️ John room for you to do it because again it has it has to be functional in a way and then for the software

⏹️ ▶️ John same type of thing like obviously there was a big i’m going to get to the theory that i haven’t seen anyone espouse

⏹️ ▶️ John yet in the chat room i’m surprised i’m sure it’s in one of these articles that was low roofline months ago earthquake

⏹️ ▶️ John now ruf leak

⏹️ ▶️ John, Casey that’s not good

⏹️ ▶️ John all right that’s better than an earthquake you’re fine that’s a lot of water

⏹️ ▶️ Casey i have experienced with this invasive action

⏹️ ▶️ John not need an umbrella

⏹️ ▶️ Casey oh my word see it could happen to anyone you never know i should do something about

⏹️ ▶️ Casey that

⏹️ ▶️ Casey, John house

⏹️ ▶️ Casey yea yea where were we out don’t even know

⏹️ ▶️ John anyway and continue this for that market he’ll he’ll be back in a pickup booket no the theory i was referring

⏹️ ▶️ John to is the idea that when johnny ive took over software all the fun went out of it so when

⏹️ ▶️ John you

⏹️ ▶️ John, Casey know the ia sixty seven

⏹️ ▶️ John transition johnny i was responsible for relentlessly simplifying their hardware

⏹️ ▶️ John to take all the unnecessary features out of it to make it plain and featureless and when he also took

⏹️ ▶️ John over software that was the iowa seven transition which definitely was less whimsical than iowa six

⏹️ ▶️ John and so you could put that as the villain in like that’s what had really happened because he all his

⏹️ ▶️ John hardware designs started to getting more simple and featureless and plain and just the essence of the product

⏹️ ▶️ John is just a scream we don’t need any buttons it’s just like the most elemental simple form the pencil is just a cylinder

⏹️ ▶️ John that comes to a point there’s nothing on it anywhere forget about trying to clip it onto something we don’t want that right

⏹️ ▶️ John and the same thing with the software and i think there was a zig in that direction but they’ve

⏹️ ▶️ John zagged back in a lot of places you know does does johnny i love mi

⏹️ ▶️ John moji ah you know was he jazzed about dark mode and letting people change

⏹️ ▶️ John accent colors doesn’t you know maybe maybe he’s come around maybe it was just you know

⏹️ ▶️ John a particular direction but it definitely seems a hard move in the opposite direction to the

⏹️ ▶️ John point now where i feel like the the hardware in certain product lines

⏹️ ▶️ John is continues be to be somewhat whimsical and fun and the software has turned

⏹️ ▶️ John a corner and is trending in that direction and so in the long view i feel like there have been oscillations and there were

⏹️ ▶️ John some big ones and there was a definite switch between harbor and software but if you average the whole line out it doesn’t

⏹️ ▶️ John turn into a slope that suddenly goes down or suddenly goes up

⏹️ ▶️ Marco and the wave mattress for sponsoring our show

⏹️ ▶️ Casey what do you think marco

⏹️ ▶️ John he’s just trying to keep water away from his computer

⏹️ ▶️ Marco i would like so badly to pay attention to this conversation right now but in between the time that

⏹️ ▶️ Marco john started talking and now a massive thunderstorm started i had to run around and close all the

⏹️ ▶️ Marco windows in the house because no one else is home because they all went out drinking without me

⏹️ ▶️ Marco some amount of water might have gotten on groupers five thousand dollar review laptop from apple

⏹️ ▶️ Marco, Casey and and and and

⏹️ ▶️ Marco so i we ran around close the windows that’s

⏹️ ▶️ John exactly the laptop you want water to get on though it’s apple review laptops not yours not your problem

⏹️ ▶️ Marco give it back to them yet and now it’s water cooled so it won’t overheat and uh

⏹️ ▶️ Marco and then why i finally sat back down and and started listening again and then i

⏹️ ▶️ Marco noticed there’s a i felt like a little splash in the back of my arm oh god turn around

⏹️ ▶️ Marco and and there’s a wet spot on the floor now hops is in here but you

⏹️ ▶️ Marco know i trust him and he was sitting back there a little bit ago but

⏹️ ▶️ Marco isn’t any more and i mean now i know why because the wet spot wasn’t him turns out now it’s a dripping

⏹️ ▶️ Marco now you can actually hear the water hang on

⏹️ ▶️ Casey oh oh oh my that’s that’s

⏹️ ▶️ Casey, Marco not desire so

⏹️ ▶️ Marco that’s that’s the trip now and so i had to run out get a tupperware

⏹️ ▶️ Marco bucket you know you know container for the water to fall into although normalizing i’m going

⏹️ ▶️ Marco to be hearing that sound for the rest of the so i may need something smaller

⏹️ ▶️ Marco for the water to fall into

⏹️ ▶️ John we can’t hear it when your mike’s not next to it so it’ll be no

⏹️ ▶️ Marco problem i’ve also discovered that a the door upstairs that

⏹️ ▶️ Marco opens up onto the deck does not go all the way to the floor and

⏹️ ▶️ Marco water is coming under it so the upstairs landing is a little bit damp

⏹️ ▶️ John has it never rained on this house before

⏹️ ▶️ John, Marco okay

⏹️ ▶️ Marco so this house this this house has been a rental for a very long time

⏹️ ▶️ Marco and when you have a rental the idea is to put his little money into it as

⏹️ ▶️ Marco possible over time and to his max out bedroom space and most people who are going to

⏹️ ▶️ Marco use a vacation rental are going to use it for like a week and then never again and so it doesn’t

⏹️ ▶️ Marco really need to be great um it certainly doesn’t need to be maintained and one of the ways

⏹️ ▶️ Marco they’ve saved money over time is by fully enclosing a four sided wrap

⏹️ ▶️ Marco around porch and turning all those into bedrooms that is what i’m in right now because one of them has

⏹️ ▶️ Marco become my office when you enclose a wrap around deck that’s very very old and you make

⏹️ ▶️ Marco it into rooms you kind of ignore the fact that like deck roofs usually

⏹️ ▶️ Marco aren’t made to the same standards as interior roofs so that’s problem number one i’m encountering

⏹️ ▶️ Marco right now which is why my elbow got wet and why hops temporarily had something blamed on him that was not his fault

⏹️ ▶️ Marco and the other problem that one of the reasons the deck door upstairs lets water in

⏹️ ▶️ Marco because it’s the same reason that the front door lets water in because all of the wood everywhere along

⏹️ ▶️ Marco all four sides of the house is very very rotten because one

⏹️ ▶️ Marco of the ways they save money over time is by not putting in any gutters drainage or eaves anywhere

⏹️ ▶️ Marco need so when it rains as it’s doing very much right now the water simply flows

⏹️ ▶️ Marco down all four sides of the house it runs off the roof and the deck and it

⏹️ ▶️ Marco just flows down the sides of the house and of course gets all over you know we have to close the

⏹️ ▶️ Marco windows when it rains because you can’t leave them open because there’s no eaves or anything so the range porton there’s little

⏹️ ▶️ Marco like a waterfall down like you can see like when it rains evil you can kind of see like this waterfall coming down

⏹️ ▶️ Marco the wind all the windows to my word and uh and

⏹️ ▶️ Marco and of course the front door has the same as you where the water you know falls down on on the

⏹️ ▶️ Marco the patio in front of the front door and splashes under the gap that’s under the front door because the

⏹️ ▶️ Marco gap used to be not a gap but it rotted out because of all the water splashing in front of it and

⏹️ ▶️ Marco so we bought this for the location

⏹️ ▶️ John well i would uh maybe consider

⏹️ ▶️ John, Marco moving

⏹️ ▶️ John all the laptops to the lake house part of the house

⏹️ ▶️ Marco maybe my imac pro is it out there too it’s it’s in the office which is you know

⏹️ ▶️ Marco former porch

⏹️ ▶️ John that that’s not a great plan there no so is this literally the first time that like the roof

⏹️ ▶️ John has ever had a leak in it it’s the first time i’ve been here for it when you’re not there water

⏹️ ▶️ John is just flowing in but it evaporates by the time you’re

⏹️ ▶️ Marco up yeah like i imagine if i like you know tear up the carpet right here where the water is landing i imagine i’m going to

⏹️ ▶️ Marco find some you know discolored wood from all of the times it has ever rained

⏹️ ▶️ Casey alright so do we want to try to bring do we want to come back to the whimsy conversation

⏹️ ▶️ Casey we just we just put in a fork in

⏹️ ▶️ John it the only thing i have to add to the whimsy conversation is you know this kind of gets back to

⏹️ ▶️ John margaret’s complaints about the watch and whimsy not being the same thing as being good another

⏹️ ▶️ John place where there’s lots of whimsey and modern apple is ceri now go that

⏹️ ▶️ John good old

⏹️ ▶️ John, Marco series snark

⏹️ ▶️ John where you try to ask us something and syria has a funny response and that’s whimsical and

⏹️ ▶️ John people don’t like it sometimes sometimes that’s that’s part of the reason like

⏹️ ▶️ John you know the trend away from whimsy and software and stuff is like if individual people who get

⏹️ ▶️ John to put their names in the credits make the software and they do some fun thing or they have some future or whatever

⏹️ ▶️ John it can go too far and some aspect of an application can be playful in a way that people find annoying

⏹️ ▶️ John because they just want it to be utilitarian and they don’t want to you know apple hasn’t done this for the most part but you everyone

⏹️ ▶️ John has seen applications like this where someone has an idea to make a part of the quote unquote fun especially

⏹️ ▶️ John if you can’t say but like it makes a honking noise or does a little animation and it’s an operation that you do all the time

⏹️ ▶️ John and like siri every time you ask it to do something coming back with a even

⏹️ ▶️ John if it’s just a too verbose thing or being too friendly or whatever it can be annoying so whimsy is not necessarily

⏹️ ▶️ John a formula for good and delight that’s just the best case worst case scenario

⏹️ ▶️ John when something is whimsical and playful you just wish it would get out of your way and do what it’s supposed to do and that’s where

⏹️ ▶️ John johnny ive appears in his white world and says see if we had reduced it to his essence you wouldn’t be having

⏹️ ▶️ John this haha

⏹️ ▶️ Casey word right marco do you have any other parting thoughts on this since you were running around the house most of this

⏹️ ▶️ Casey segment

⏹️ ▶️ Marco what was one landing spot on the rug has now become three landing spots in the rug and the bowl i picked is

⏹️ ▶️ Marco not quite wide enough to cover all three

⏹️ ▶️ Marco, John of them

⏹️ ▶️ John that’s the way leagues work they don’t stay

⏹️ ▶️ Marco on as i should have gotten three bowls and all three of them having some kind of soft landing area so i wouldn’t hear the drips

⏹️ ▶️ Marco well at least when it lands roughly on the carpet i don’t hear the

⏹️ ▶️ Casey maybe we should make this a short show so maybe you shouldn’t have any further commentary on wimsey

⏹️ ▶️ Marco yeah i mean i want it so funny when tapping

⏹️ ▶️ Marco, John behind me you know

⏹️ ▶️ John it’s whimsical water leaking through your roof it great whenever you see some whenever you see

⏹️ ▶️ John like someone in like an old shack or something in a movie you want to be like a whimsical like a in a forest

⏹️ ▶️ John dwelling or whatever and it rains there’s a little bucket with a drip of water in it because that’s fun and delightful and homey

⏹️ ▶️ John and whimsical so you’re getting the whole experience now

⏹️ ▶️ Marco i should probably install this silicone keyboard cover on my new macbook pro

⏹️ ▶️ Casey immediately

⏹️ ▶️ Marco that’s not going to save you so pericles and the chat suggest drilling a hole in my macbook we

⏹️ ▶️ Marco and train like my air conditioner

⏹️ ▶️ John said you’re going to get out the drill and you’ll see this big yellow sticker on the roof of a house that says do not

⏹️ ▶️ John drill holes in this house

⏹️ ▶️ Casey and then promptly remove it continued drilling oh gosh that’s good

⏹️ ▶️ Marco that’s a good amount of water that’s filled that bowl so far i would

⏹️ ▶️ Casey say do you want to get another bowl do you want to get another bowl we can

⏹️ ▶️ John wait what color is the water is it like brown and gross no

⏹️ ▶️ Marco it’s it appears i mean it’s sitting on a brown gross rug so it maybe it’s a little bit hard to tell but and it’s sitting

⏹️ ▶️ Marco inside but you know like those the color of like rubber maid or tupperware containers from

⏹️ ▶️ Marco like the eighties like it’s it’s it’s that color container and i’m pretty sure that container

⏹️ ▶️ Marco was from about the age that the roof is yeah i’d say it’s probably about ten

⏹️ ▶️ Marco ounces of water already in that bowl oh

⏹️ ▶️ John my word this is what you’ll take a picture of to make the the podcast art for this

⏹️ ▶️ John, Casey i

⏹️ ▶️ Casey should i should take a picture right now actually

⏹️ ▶️ John is this is giving a whole new spin to a tips double rainbow picture she was taking

⏹️ ▶️ John what does it mean you know what it means it means you’re going to have water in your house

⏹️ ▶️ Casey soon it’s a flooded house god

⏹️ ▶️ Casey not not good at all do you need to get more bowls or can we do some ask tp

⏹️ ▶️ Marco oh we can do some ask teepee this this tip we bowl has i have it under the

⏹️ ▶️ Marco spot that most of the water is falling on so only there’s only some small gift spots in hers

⏹️ ▶️ Marco i mean look the whole floor under is his rotten anyway now and i know that i know that now

⏹️ ▶️ John we get a little bit wet and you should count yourself lucky that this this this leak

⏹️ ▶️ John has the courtesy to fall someplace that is not like directly on top of your computer

⏹️ ▶️ Marco that’s true yeah although i think i just felt a splatter on my leg that’s not good

⏹️ ▶️ John well it may be approaching but i’m saying like the trips usually don’t care and if it was going directly on top of your computer your options

⏹️ ▶️ John especially on your imac like that’s bad

⏹️ ▶️ Marco i have a sheet over in these sheets aren’t uh no yeah you

⏹️ ▶️ John should try like a garbage bag yeah a tarp i’m

⏹️ ▶️ John, Marco having sharp

⏹️ ▶️ Marco i might do that

⏹️ ▶️ John when i go to bed tonight actually bring that thing into the bedroom with

⏹️ ▶️ John someplace you’ll trip over when you get up in the night to be

⏹️ ▶️ Casey oh my word

⏹️ ▶️ Marco dot com slash at p twenty and code a t p twenty for twenty dollars

⏹️ ▶️ Marco off thanks to simple contact for sponsoring our show

⏹️ ▶️ Casey let’s do some ass before marco gets electrocuted broadway herb writes

⏹️ ▶️ Casey i have many portable external drives and they keep filling up what is the best it’s that with water

⏹️ ▶️ Casey or something else what is the best solution for storing large video files drills

⏹️ ▶️ Casey drills and that’ll do it theology sounds very complicated but isn’t the next best

⏹️ ▶️ Casey step i am hugely biased so the three of us got sent one or two depending

⏹️ ▶️ Casey on which one of us you’re talking about one or two synology units several years ago now and i am

⏹️ ▶️ Casey so in love with my synology i cannot even begin to describe it and i am in love with it enough that

⏹️ ▶️ Casey if this thing died tomorrow i would spend the truly obscene amount of money

⏹️ ▶️ Casey that it would cost to replace it because i am that in love with it a while ago i was trying to convince

⏹️ ▶️ Casey a friend of the show adviser to get himself a conolly and i was writing or i had written

⏹️ ▶️ Casey a post describing the bare basics of what you need to know in order to have your own synology i will

⏹️ ▶️ Casey link that in the show notes i don’t know that that’s necessarily the next step but it is

⏹️ ▶️ Casey certainly a great next step um but there’s other things in the middle like you

⏹️ ▶️ Casey could do something comparatively simpler like drobo which i’ve heard about half the people i know have drobo s love

⏹️ ▶️ Casey them and about half the people that i know that have drobo frig and hate them so take

⏹️ ▶️ Casey that for what you will but again i mean the synology did send us those those units now yet

⏹️ ▶️ Casey we didn’t pay for them but i love my synology and i would absolutely pay for it tomorrow

⏹️ ▶️ Casey if i had to um john what would you do if you had a lot of external drives that

⏹️ ▶️ Casey were overflowing and what would your next step be

⏹️ ▶️ John so this question says that they you know keep dying buying extra drives and they keep filling up i think the next

⏹️ ▶️ John step is like something like a mass like as if you know my advice for storing stuff as yet good

⏹️ ▶️ John to external drives they can be really big and they’re cheap and you know that’s the way to do it but if you keep doing that and they keep filling

⏹️ ▶️ John up and you’re frustrated by the fact they’re filling up some kind of storage solution where you can add hard drives and especially that you

⏹️ ▶️ John can replace them with larger capacity ones you know so it’s having some kind of raid or other you

⏹️ ▶️ John know shared data arrangement that’s that’s the next step and synology sounds complicated and it’s very

⏹️ ▶️ John capable there’s a lot of things you can do with it but i’ve always been impressed by you know

⏹️ ▶️ John not just in any of these things even like the freenas stuff or whatever it’s it’s not as bad as you

⏹️ ▶️ John think it’s going to be um it takes a little bit to think about and set up but once

⏹️ ▶️ John it’s up and running and doing the thing that you wanted to do especially if you just wanted to serve as a big bucket of bits

⏹️ ▶️ John to store stuff like you can do it it’s and in my experience

⏹️ ▶️ John it’s you know it’s been very reliable and you know you don’t you don’t

⏹️ ▶️ John think about the initial set up happens and then that’s that so if you keep filling up external drives which is

⏹️ ▶️ John a much simpler solution the next move is some kind of box with a bunch of discs in it and that you have a lot of

⏹️ ▶️ John choices and yet you have to do research and stuff but like casey i have totally come around

⏹️ ▶️ John on it and i will i can’t go back now if my synology dies i’m

⏹️ ▶️ John buying a new

⏹️ ▶️ Casey one yep marco are you still there or are you into water

⏹️ ▶️ Marco the drips are getting louder so the bulls filling

⏹️ ▶️ Casey so you so you may not have opinions about overflowing external drives but what are your opinions

⏹️ ▶️ Casey about external over following balls

⏹️ ▶️ Marco and i think um i mean if you if you take the question as you know has written

⏹️ ▶️ Marco how do you store even more video files even more large video files than what external drives

⏹️ ▶️ Marco can hold then yes sure you know something like casino ogy or other nas type

⏹️ ▶️ Marco solution is the way to do that but that’s you know if you’re filling up external

⏹️ ▶️ Marco hard drive an external hard drive you can get those what up like ten terabytes now so if you’re filling those up

⏹️ ▶️ Marco you’re going to fill up a synology pretty soon too synology is to box with like eight hard drives in it so

⏹️ ▶️ John you’ll fill it up one

⏹️ ▶️ Marco this fast won’t you i guess but like that you know that it basically it brings

⏹️ ▶️ Marco more problems it’s one and it’s and you know the phonology unit you know i still have the one as case you mentioned

⏹️ ▶️ Marco that you know that we all got as previous thanks to their generosity and you know i use it i don’t really think

⏹️ ▶️ Marco about it much it just is there it’s like a big archive drive for me and tiff and it’s

⏹️ ▶️ Marco and you know it just kind of serves a couple of you know minor roles but for the most part just like a big archive drive

⏹️ ▶️ Marco and it’s our time michigan host drive and so it’s nice for that and and i don’t i don’t ever really go update

⏹️ ▶️ Marco i really like i’ll remember to do it me once a year i’ll go update the software on it whatever or whatever but for the most

⏹️ ▶️ Marco part it updates itself it keeps itself going and i don’t really ever have to know about it i keep it in my

⏹️ ▶️ Marco garage it runs there year round twenty four seven and it’s

⏹️ ▶️ Marco fine so you know it isn’t a whole lot of of work to keep

⏹️ ▶️ Marco it but it is just like one more thing it’s one more in avenue of complexity

⏹️ ▶️ Marco it’s one more thing that you have to buy and you know that these things are not cheap you know i think empty

⏹️ ▶️ Marco it’s something like a thousand dollars or something like that for for for one with a bunch of

⏹️ ▶️ Marco, Casey bass in it

⏹️ ▶️ Marco you know a bunch of disks that’s probably another like thousand bucks for for large ones if not more than that

⏹️ ▶️ Marco so like you’re putting a lot of money into this thing and it’s another thing to manage and it’s another thing

⏹️ ▶️ Marco to maintain and it’s another thing that might have security issues that you need to worry about or hear about or get patched or whatever

⏹️ ▶️ Marco else it’s like you add a lot of complexity to this and then you have

⏹️ ▶️ Marco this big loud well yeah it’s kind of loud to me you have this big box full of disks that are probably loud

⏹️ ▶️ Marco somewhere in your house that you have to maintain and leave on and pay for the power for and everything else so like

⏹️ ▶️ Marco it’s a pretty large solution instead i

⏹️ ▶️ Marco would say before you jump into that i would ask yourself is there any way i can find

⏹️ ▶️ Marco a way to need to keep fewer or smaller video files forever you know is

⏹️ ▶️ Marco there is there some other way to address this problem and i don’t know you know what brahmans needs are here

⏹️ ▶️ Marco you know it could be could be that you know that they’re storing like source video files

⏹️ ▶️ Marco for video creation projects that just can’t be down raised or or anything else but

⏹️ ▶️ Marco you know if it’s the case of like storing you know like final cut working files or video project files

⏹️ ▶️ Marco what format files have to be in do they really have to be stored like in pro res where it’s like this

⏹️ ▶️ Marco massive like you know minimally compressed or uncompressed source file or is

⏹️ ▶️ Marco it you know can it be stored as like the final output file does it really need do you need to stroll

⏹️ ▶️ Marco the sources you need to all the sources in high in the highest format can can they tolerate compression once they go

⏹️ ▶️ Marco once they are a certain age old things like that you know just to avoid needing to store such

⏹️ ▶️ Marco massive vials and quite so many of them because if you’re if you’re going through terabytes

⏹️ ▶️ Marco and terabytes that’s those are pretty significant needs for somebody who’s trying to

⏹️ ▶️ Marco like you know like not for not like a video production company for like just per one person that’s pretty substantial

⏹️ ▶️ Marco and so if there’s any way to do to deal with just addressing the problem of do you really need to

⏹️ ▶️ Marco keep all these and do they really need to be as big as they are i would try to solve

⏹️ ▶️ Marco that or really you know take a hard look at that first and if you really

⏹️ ▶️ Marco really can’t do it then i guess a only or something like that but

⏹️ ▶️ Marco it’s such a heavy solution exhaust all other possibilities first

⏹️ ▶️ Casey i don’t disagree with you but man you should try this small it’s really great

⏹️ ▶️ Casey it’s expensive but it’s really great

#askatp: Mac replacement cycle

⏹️ ▶️ Casey chris tucker meier writes the following and this is for batum serious question

⏹️ ▶️ Casey despite the obvious jokes how do you decide when to replace personal computers or devices new

⏹️ ▶️ Casey one every x years fixed annual budget keep them until they die or can’t run the latest os gut

⏹️ ▶️ Casey feeling on a case by case basis and i was thinking about this for myself

⏹️ ▶️ Casey and first of all i had to stop giggling about all the jokes i wanted to make but secondly

⏹️ ▶️ Casey generally speaking i replaced computers very very very slowly not as slowly as john

⏹️ ▶️ Casey but pretty darned slowly um i bought my imac that i’m using now

⏹️ ▶️ Casey right before i started my last job by job so that was the beginning of

⏹️ ▶️ Casey twenty sixteen so this is two years old now and i think the graphics card may be going or it needs to reinstall

⏹️ ▶️ Casey but that’s a whole different issue moving on the the last laptop of all was the macbook

⏹️ ▶️ Casey adorable which i bought just over a year ago that one’s a little bit of a special

⏹️ ▶️ Casey case because i will probably buy a new one the moment a new one comes out just because

⏹️ ▶️ Casey i want that sweet sweet speed whatever you know whatever improvement a new one would bring but generally

⏹️ ▶️ Casey speaking like before that i hadn’t bought a laptop since like twenty eleven i think whenever we were talking

⏹️ ▶️ Casey about this last episode actually the whenever the high res anti glare macpro was a thing that was

⏹️ ▶️ Casey the last one i had bought with and this was when when ssd’s

⏹️ ▶️ Casey either weren’t a thing or were so prohibitively expensive that they effectively weren’t a thing so i don’t buy

⏹️ ▶️ Casey computers very often at all that being said john you buy one once

⏹️ ▶️ Casey every what fifteen years

⏹️ ▶️ John i like this thing this question you know serious questions about the obvious jokes but the jokes aren’t jokes there

⏹️ ▶️ John there are actual answers like we all have all three of us have different a decision making about when we

⏹️ ▶️ John decide to replace a computer and that’s the answer to this question we make jokes about it because sometimes you know

⏹️ ▶️ John other people’s habits seem silly or whatever me taking a long time marco by and everything you know

⏹️ ▶️ John computers doing right but those those are literally the answer so i feel like

⏹️ ▶️ John if you listen to the show for a long time you kind of know how we all decide like i feel like he could answer for all three of us

⏹️ ▶️ John and no one way of deciding when to buy a new computer is right or wrong but he’s just asking

⏹️ ▶️ John us what they are so mean for me as i think you can tell for all these tech things in my life i’m always

⏹️ ▶️ John trying to buy like what i think is like a winter product like

⏹️ ▶️ John it’s it’s not the very first it’s not the very last it’s not the one that totally needs to be replaced it’s not going

⏹️ ▶️ John to be the model that everybody hated like i have criteria that are important

⏹️ ▶️ John to me and i’m looking for the computer that fulfills them and you know i’ve been waiting on my

⏹️ ▶️ John my personal mac the one i’m using right now for a long time because apple just hasn’t made one that

⏹️ ▶️ John feels like it’s up to snuff and i and my decision making is i don’t want to buy like an in between

⏹️ ▶️ John model if i can at all help it like i would have been perfectly happy with the five imac or imac pro

⏹️ ▶️ John like those would be great to be way better than what i’m doing but i’m like but you know and especially they’ve kind of been leading me on with

⏹️ ▶️ John the mac pro thing it’s not exactly what i want i want a computer that’s like the one i have but newer

⏹️ ▶️ John and if eventually it was clear that apple was never going to make one yeah i would have bought an imac pro like that would have happened

⏹️ ▶️ John but apple has continued to string me along and just when i was about to give up they had that apple

⏹️ ▶️ John event in april and said we’re going to make a new appro so i’ve been waiting for that but that’s that’s my philosophy same thing with televisions

⏹️ ▶️ John like him or even cars like i you know i need probably needed a new car sooner

⏹️ ▶️ John than i bought one but there was a generation of honda corp that i just didn’t like it was you know i had driven them as

⏹️ ▶️ John a loner i thought they were ugly i didn’t like how they they the interior looked or felt

⏹️ ▶️ John i felt the ride was weird like they weren’t you know so i waited like i will i will i would rather

⏹️ ▶️ John wait and get a product that i feel like i’ll be happy with both initially and for the

⏹️ ▶️ John long term rather than by immediately and for other you know other computers in the house like as

⏹️ ▶️ John i’m not the only one who has one here i’m mostly kind of like we do with the cars we use them

⏹️ ▶️ John until it’s clear that they can’t fulfill the needs any more like the disk

⏹️ ▶️ John is too small the thing is too slow like whatever i don’t i don’t keep them you know in

⏹️ ▶️ John case i amber and say you’re going to run you know snow leopard forever because it’s the only one that that makes

⏹️ ▶️ John you fast i just keep operating the operating system and if it gets too slow i buy a new computer but for the most part

⏹️ ▶️ John i want to get mileage out of my stock i want to buy a pretty good one i want to use it for a long time and

⏹️ ▶️ John i replace it when it’s needed and you know so my wife’s got the five k i mac

⏹️ ▶️ John i think the thing will make me replace that is it’s got one terrified internal drive and i’m

⏹️ ▶️ John always pressing up against the edge of that eventually i’m going to have so many photos because i keep all the originals on my computer

⏹️ ▶️ John that it won’t fit any more and that is going to prompt me to buy her a new probably a new five kim k

⏹️ ▶️ John so yeah the the answer varies but i definitely am looking for the best

⏹️ ▶️ John time to buy a computer that’s going to be in for the long haul same thing with my cars and televisions

⏹️ ▶️ Casey so marco every five minutes

⏹️ ▶️ Marco um i mean yeah i basically buy a computer whenever you know for a desktop

⏹️ ▶️ Marco i actually am fairly conservative because typically when it comes to

⏹️ ▶️ Marco desktops i i buy like the the biggest fastest one that i can

⏹️ ▶️ Marco when i need one and then i don’t i try not to upgrade that until

⏹️ ▶️ Marco there is something meaningful to upgrade to from there you know the high end i

⏹️ ▶️ Marco mean like most macs these days it doesn’t move that quickly and when you buy super high

⏹️ ▶️ Marco end you know when you buy super fast stuff there’s a lot less need to constantly upgrade it like people

⏹️ ▶️ Marco like kissy who own the macbook adorable they always want the next one because

⏹️ ▶️ Marco it’s barely powerful enough to function and so like when the next one adds like

⏹️ ▶️ Marco ten percent more performance they’re like oh my god please anything and they go by it which is actually

⏹️ ▶️ Marco kind of a funny incentive for that

⏹️ ▶️ Marco, Casey in

⏹️ ▶️ Marco to keep it not that great and yes i know it’s intelsat

⏹️ ▶️ Marco anyway um so like you know when you when you buy high and stuff like john’s macpro like you know today we

⏹️ ▶️ Marco can make fun of john’s macpro because all of our phones are now faster than it probably but when john

⏹️ ▶️ Marco bought it fifty years ago it was a really great computer for like five years

⏹️ ▶️ Marco after that like and and it still was good even after that it was it was it was like

⏹️ ▶️ Marco you couldn’t get much it that was faster than that for a long time so there was no reason

⏹️ ▶️ Marco for john to buy a new mac pro for like the first four four or five years of owning it because there really wasn’t

⏹️ ▶️ Marco that much that was better than that one that that would have been available and so you would have been spending a lot of

⏹️ ▶️ Marco money to get something only you know a little bit better because when you buy at the higher

⏹️ ▶️ Marco end like there’s not much more headroom there for products to go in the next few years

⏹️ ▶️ Marco and it’s a long time before yours becomes you know irrelevant or prohibitively slow or

⏹️ ▶️ Marco prohibitive limited in other ways so that’s what i do on the desktop the desktop is i buy pro desktops

⏹️ ▶️ Marco whenever possible and i use them for a while you know usually between two and four years the

⏹️ ▶️ Marco laptop side i change fairly frequently you know about about on average i think i’m

⏹️ ▶️ Marco about once a year maybe for the laptop side and part of that is because i

⏹️ ▶️ Marco i have been dissatisfied with so many of the laptops recently i’ve been waffling between different ones and

⏹️ ▶️ Marco i try one that my needs change or then i have a different idea of how i want to use it and then

⏹️ ▶️ Marco or and or i decide that i hate it because it’s terrible and so i sell it and then change

⏹️ ▶️ Marco to a different one to see if that one will be good and and we’ll keep it hot for a for a long time but that’s

⏹️ ▶️ Marco obviously like you know not something that most people need to want to you are able to do so

⏹️ ▶️ Marco i’m not going to say that’s a good strategy for anybody it’s certainly not very efficient it’s only because i’ve been so dissatisfied

⏹️ ▶️ Marco that i’m trying to find something good and finally i would say that

⏹️ ▶️ Marco you know the idea you know what chris asked here was like do you buy a new one every x years

⏹️ ▶️ Marco do you have a fixed annual budget and i would say those aren’t great

⏹️ ▶️ Marco approaches because anything based on like i will i will evaluate this

⏹️ ▶️ Marco decision every x years or i will evaluate this decision will apply x

⏹️ ▶️ Marco you know dollars a year to to my computer pool and you know drain it when i feel like it

⏹️ ▶️ Marco the problem with those approaches is that that assumes that computers make linear progress over

⏹️ ▶️ Marco time and that whenever you know that whenever that interval comes up you know whether there’s enough

⏹️ ▶️ Marco money in the pool or whether it has been your x years for your upgrade interval that assumes that that

⏹️ ▶️ Marco will be a decent time to buy a mac or to buy to buy your next computer whatever that is and that’s simply not how this

⏹️ ▶️ Marco works in practice and of course you know in recent years it’s been getting even more extreme with like you know the duration between

⏹️ ▶️ Marco updates of a lot of products but like that just isn’t a good strategy for you know to to

⏹️ ▶️ Marco tie yourself to a fixed timeline in a market that doesn’t

⏹️ ▶️ Marco follow a fixed timeline or even a remotely linear one so for instance you don’t want to buy something

⏹️ ▶️ Marco right before it’s probably going to be upgraded if you don’t have a pressing need right

⏹️ ▶️ Marco then to have it right then like if you can wait wait right but even things like not every

⏹️ ▶️ Marco generation is significant you now i mentioned the you know my desktop moves

⏹️ ▶️ Marco the last tip i bought before that my pro was the imac five k i jumped the gun on a cycle

⏹️ ▶️ Marco i had a trashcan mac pro and i was planning on using it for years but instead

⏹️ ▶️ Marco the five k came out and changed everything because it gave me desktop five kv resolution retina

⏹️ ▶️ Marco which i didn’t think would be possible for a few more years and it was so it was such a compelling

⏹️ ▶️ Marco package that i changed my plans and just got that and sold the mac

⏹️ ▶️ Marco pro and actually paid for the entire imac or at least the majority of it with with the profit and so

⏹️ ▶️ Marco i jumped the gun because conditions change in the market but then after that the one of the

⏹️ ▶️ Marco reasons i kept that five k imac for a little over three years

⏹️ ▶️ Marco is because the new ones that had come out after that weren’t better enough

⏹️ ▶️ Marco it wasn’t a big enough gain from what i already had because i had bought this great computer until the imac pro

⏹️ ▶️ Marco came out and the imac pro was so good and it was so much better than what i had that i could actually get something

⏹️ ▶️ Marco that was like two or three times faster and had had you know a few other benefits as well that i’m like

⏹️ ▶️ Marco okay now this is a is a good time but if i would have said i’m going to buy a new desktop

⏹️ ▶️ Marco every three years i would have bought the five k and then i would have bought

⏹️ ▶️ Marco the you know the version of it that’s i think still the current version now but i would have missed the imac

⏹️ ▶️ Marco pros it would have been too early and so it’s it’s just you have to pay some attention to what’s actually

⏹️ ▶️ Marco being released what the actual products are like what the cycles are if you want to optimize for you can now if you don’t care

⏹️ ▶️ Marco that’s a different story if you don’t care first of all you probably aren’t listening to our show because let’s be honest but

⏹️ ▶️ Marco but uh you know that’s another story or if you’re desperate if your computer broke and you need one and the update isn’t

⏹️ ▶️ Marco likely to come out for like you know six months fine then get whatever you can at the time you get it

⏹️ ▶️ Marco and you know sometimes we ought to do that but if you have flexibility in your timing that’s it’s

⏹️ ▶️ Marco way better to actually look at the market and make judgment calls based on conditions as they happen

⏹️ ▶️ Marco as opposed to just saying every next year i’m going to replace this with whatever i can find at that point

⏹️ ▶️ Casey yeah i think i very much agree with that and if you need a tool with which to evaluate that it’s not

⏹️ ▶️ Casey great and you miss a lot of like context but the macrumors buyers buyer’s

⏹️ ▶️ Casey guide which we will put in the show notes that’s a really good way to just kind of get

⏹️ ▶️ Casey a rough guess for is it a terrible idea to buy this computer right now

⏹️ ▶️ Casey or is it an okay idea or is it a great time to do it so it’s worth checking that out if you’ve never seen

⏹️ ▶️ Casey it

#askatp: Swift and Copland 2010

⏹️ ▶️ Casey finally we have a bit of a throwback which i am con excited about

⏹️ ▶️ Casey rob mathers writes on the surface swift obviously addresses the spirit of copeland twenty ten but doesn’t

⏹️ ▶️ Casey address the specifics is it really moving along the quote higher level language quote progression

⏹️ ▶️ Casey so copeland twenty ten was an article that john you wrote in what was it two thousand five where you

⏹️ ▶️ Casey said hey apple really needs to get on this new language bandwagon and do it pretty much yesterday

⏹️ ▶️ Casey or there’s going to be problems and and you kind of laid out here’s what i think that new language needs

⏹️ ▶️ Casey to be able to do so did they do it are we good now is everyone happy

⏹️ ▶️ John people ask about this from time to time and it was actually a series of articles and then i did a follow up article actually in

⏹️ ▶️ John twenty ten

⏹️ ▶️ John, Casey about it and i

⏹️ ▶️ John think i asked an answer in there but those are all old articles this points people haven’t seen them um

⏹️ ▶️ John but yeah like the swift is pretty much hits every

⏹️ ▶️ John single point in a surprising way like you know i knew they’d have to

⏹️ ▶️ John do something but you’d think well maybe they’ll you know maybe they’ll do something that is more like an evolution

⏹️ ▶️ John of objective sea or you know they they wouldn’t go all away to have a very

⏹️ ▶️ John different language not just different in syntax with difference in semantics and all sorts

⏹️ ▶️ John of new features and like everything that swift is right i think everyone

⏹️ ▶️ John was caught by surprise by what a break swift was despite the fact that early on they were really

⏹️ ▶️ John down playing they were really playing swift up as it’s not that different from objective see before kind of like swift came into

⏹️ ▶️ John its own it’s like haha no really it’s pretty different it took a couple of years for that ah

⏹️ ▶️ John the only area i think the reason people ask this is they think well swift is you know swift is not very dynamic and it

⏹️ ▶️ John has it has these aims of extending itself down to be capable of low level stuff as well and

⏹️ ▶️ John all that is true but it still fulfils all the requirements definitely a new syntax new language

⏹️ ▶️ John model uh you know it still has the ability to have unsafe

⏹️ ▶️ John pointers and stuff like that but they’re called unsafe like when you just use the language regularly you’re not dereferencing

⏹️ ▶️ John pointers you do not have to worry about accidentally scribbling all over member you scribble a member you’re definitely doing it

⏹️ ▶️ John a purpose and swift uh so and it’s not a

⏹️ ▶️ John lucy uzi uh you know everything is dynamic a

⏹️ ▶️ John type of language like you know a ruby or perl or java script or something like that

⏹️ ▶️ John and maybe that’s what people think is like oh it’s not it’s not like this but it’s not like small talk it’s it’s

⏹️ ▶️ John more like a you know a fancy seal house but it is it is higher level it does fulfil

⏹️ ▶️ John all the criteria for the most part it doesn’t run on a virtual machine that’s true

⏹️ ▶️ John but it’s close enough like it’s it’s never there was never going to be you know

⏹️ ▶️ John a fantasy language that fulfilled all my hopes and dreams exactly

⏹️ ▶️ John right and the fact that swift came as close as it did is like you know a miracle beyond my wildest

⏹️ ▶️ John dreams absolutely it addressed all the problems of copen twenty ten it

⏹️ ▶️ John came about at a reasonable time like in my open twenty ten revisited

⏹️ ▶️ John article i explained why i thought that twenty ten came and went and nothing happened and there were good reasons for it ah

⏹️ ▶️ John yeah so sorry sorry to disappoint if you’re looking fo some out of controversy

⏹️ ▶️ John, Casey but they did

⏹️ ▶️ John it it was called swift it was great i was there not

⏹️ ▶️ John, Casey to get a

⏹️ ▶️ John shirt i

⏹️ ▶️ John, Casey was

⏹️ ▶️ John you

⏹️ ▶️ John, Casey caught

⏹️ ▶️ John by surprise

#askatp: Bad music

⏹️ ▶️ Casey right we actually have a bonus asked t p this week a late breaking news uh

⏹️ ▶️ Casey let’s see ted hardy writes hey casey how’s the new dave matthews band album which

⏹️ ▶️ Casey, John actually

⏹️ ▶️ Casey came out like a month or two ago hey buddy how’s it going i actually don’t have too much to say

⏹️ ▶️ Casey about it it’s good i’ve listened to it more than i expected i don’t typically listen to studio albums

⏹️ ▶️ Casey that much but it’s good the very first song what was it called samurai cop i believe

⏹️ ▶️ Casey is a very rare example of a dave matthews band

⏹️ ▶️ Casey song that’s lyrically decent and it’s also a very rare example of me paying attention to the lyrics of any song

⏹️ ▶️ Casey i ever listen to um i think that’s very good i am obviously very very

⏹️ ▶️ Casey biased but virginia in the rain is also very good although i think my favorite

⏹️ ▶️ Casey of all of the tracks on the album might be again and again which i just think is very very

⏹️ ▶️ Casey good but it’s weird not having boyd on the album it makes sense that boy is not on the album

⏹️ ▶️ Casey but it’s good not my favorite not my least favourite it’s good what did you think about it marco

⏹️ ▶️ Marco dave matthew band remains an important part of my

⏹️ ▶️ Casey musical oh you’re so mean to me but

⏹️ ▶️ John well blunt quote he didn’t even say important it remains a product on

⏹️ ▶️ Marco our lineup

⏹️ ▶️ Marco, John i

⏹️ ▶️ Marco i think he said important in an email

⏹️ ▶️ John to somebody oh maybe maybe the important god added once he had more time to think about it

⏹️ ▶️ Casey my word

⏹️ ▶️ Marco all right thanks to our sponsors this week casper square space and simple contacts

⏹️ ▶️ Marco and we will talk to you next week

Ending theme

⏹️ ▶️ John now the show is over they didn’t even mean to begin

⏹️ ▶️ Marco because it was accidental

⏹️ ▶️ Casey it

⏹️ ▶️ Marco was

⏹️ ▶️ Casey accidental john didn’t do any research

⏹️ ▶️ John marco in case he wouldn’t let him because it was accidental

⏹️ ▶️ Casey it was accidental but you can find the

⏹️ ▶️ John chaos at p dot fm and if you’re into

⏹️ ▶️ John twitter

⏹️ ▶️ Marco you could follow them c a s e y l

⏹️ ▶️ Marco i assess that’s k lis m a r c o a r m

⏹️ ▶️ Marco nt marco men s i r a c u

⏹️ ▶️ John siracusa is absent

Neutral: Casey on Cars

⏹️ ▶️ Casey uh do we have time for a post show or do you have to go what’s the state of the

⏹️ ▶️ Marco world the rain has slowed to the point where the roof leak appears to be inactive that’s good though i think we

⏹️ ▶️ Marco have a and i already ran around close the windows and draw off john’s laptop so

⏹️ ▶️ Marco i think we i think we’re okay ah

⏹️ ▶️ Casey yeah

⏹️ ▶️ Marco the floor upstairs is still very wet though from the door leaking water under it but i’m choosing

⏹️ ▶️ Marco not to fix that right

⏹️ ▶️ Casey now that that seems not

⏹️ ▶️ Marco good i’ll deal with that later

⏹️ ▶️ Casey all right so as we record i have not yet posted my

⏹️ ▶️ Casey next case on car’s video but by the time this episode is released it will be out

⏹️ ▶️ Casey and i have sent you to advanced access to said video can we

⏹️ ▶️ Casey call it a screener yes actually i guess

⏹️ ▶️ Marco you

⏹️ ▶️ Marco, Casey can

⏹️ ▶️ Marco and it makes us feel really cool

⏹️ ▶️ Marco, Casey yeah yeah i

⏹️ ▶️ Casey sent you guys a screener it was it was on blue

⏹️ ▶️ Casey, John ray

⏹️ ▶️ John or consideration is it watermark because i already uploaded it

⏹️ ▶️ John, Casey somewhere

⏹️ ▶️ Casey you took my joke from me john you took it i was gonna say it’s a water and everything

⏹️ ▶️ Casey, Marco but

⏹️ ▶️ Marco made out of it and put it on it

⏹️ ▶️ John is that

⏹️ ▶️ John, Casey okay yeah no copyright

⏹️ ▶️ Casey intended

⏹️ ▶️ Casey, Marco exactly

⏹️ ▶️ Casey that’s a

⏹️ ▶️ Casey, John throwback

⏹️ ▶️ Casey to a

⏹️ ▶️ Casey, John man

⏹️ ▶️ Casey anyway the next version of case on cars this has become more and more obvious as i’ve been tweeting and instagramming

⏹️ ▶️ Casey more and more about it but i was given for a week a volkswagen

⏹️ ▶️ Casey golf r which i mispronounced approximately three hundred five times

⏹️ ▶️ Casey, John during that

⏹️ ▶️ John video yeah kc kc you’ve been you’ve been doing so well on the podcast and i watched the video

⏹️ ▶️ John and like what happened

⏹️ ▶️ John, Casey i know happened i

⏹️ ▶️ John, Marco though

⏹️ ▶️ John you had turned a corner you’ve been practicing on the podcast you’ve been nailing it every single time like ready to watch this

⏹️ ▶️ John video he’s going to nail it and nope you did not you you’ve

⏹️ ▶️ Casey regressed i know sometimes i did sometimes i didn’t the voiceovers were

⏹️ ▶️ Casey, John usually me

⏹️ ▶️ John oh no you never got it right not a single

⏹️ ▶️ John, Casey no

⏹️ ▶️ Casey the voice overs were better the voiceovers were better but anyway a listener of the

⏹️ ▶️ Casey show andrew was able to facilitate this for me and i’m not sure

⏹️ ▶️ Casey where his gary the privacy clown kind of threshold is so i don’t want to say much more than that but it was extremely

⏹️ ▶️ Casey kind of him and and i very very very much appreciated and i was i had the pleasure of meeting him

⏹️ ▶️ Casey at w w d c which was also excellent so thank you very much andrew um yes so

⏹️ ▶️ Casey you guys have seen the video i have talked to you somewhat about the car what do you want to

⏹️ ▶️ Marco know all right so we’re going to assume we’re going to spoil our gong this whatever we’re doing

⏹️ ▶️ Marco we’re going to assume that people have watched the video and we’re going to talk about your conclusions and the content of the video

⏹️ ▶️ Marco so you know spoiler exhaust backfire or something and here we are

⏹️ ▶️ Marco so basically if i if i can summarize your thoughts back to you because obviously that’s productive

⏹️ ▶️ Marco that’s fine that’s fine um i feel like you know so so your opinion of this car seems to basically

⏹️ ▶️ Marco have been by the way it’s a good video i really liked it um you know i know i think you were

⏹️ ▶️ Marco concerned about it might be a little bit long but i think it actually worked

⏹️ ▶️ Marco like it is long so it’s the version you showed us that the screener that we received for consideration

⏹️ ▶️ Marco was about eighteen minutes when i first saw that i thought oh that probably is going to be a little

⏹️ ▶️ Marco bit long but it didn’t feel long when i was watching it like it felt good i it felt just like oh okay

⏹️ ▶️ Marco this is casey talking about a car and there is never a point where i’m like jeez how much longer is this

⏹️ ▶️ Marco that never came so that’s good um production value wise uh you’re getting better

⏹️ ▶️ Marco you’re getting a lot better like it’s it was really pretty solid like there were a

⏹️ ▶️ Marco few like minor things that that i you know noticed i’m like oh i wish that you know that transition

⏹️ ▶️ Marco was a little bit rough or you know the audio in the car was you

⏹️ ▶️ Marco, John know not

⏹️ ▶️ Marco, Casey not ideal

⏹️ ▶️ Marco but otherwise like it was pretty good honestly it’s hard for me to judge you relative to

⏹️ ▶️ Marco other youtube car videos like your i don’t watch any of those things so

⏹️ ▶️ Marco i don’t know like what the style and i watch it embarrasing swami if you two videos

⏹️ ▶️ Marco total i so i don’t know what the style of you two videos especially you two car videos is

⏹️ ▶️ Casey i’m not sure i do either but i tell you

⏹️ ▶️ Marco but so with that you know with that like you know grain of sand aside with that you know

⏹️ ▶️ Marco bucket of leaked water aside i liked it as a stand alone thing like

⏹️ ▶️ Marco i don’t i can’t compare it to what’s out there but i can i can just say in absolute

⏹️ ▶️ Marco terms i liked it and i was

⏹️ ▶️ Marco, John impressed

⏹️ ▶️ Marco by it and and you continue to have a much stronger grasp

⏹️ ▶️ Marco on like narrative and story arc than i think most people do when they

⏹️ ▶️ Marco make videos certainly than i do when i make video but i was

⏹️ ▶️ Marco impressed by by just like how coherent the whole thing was and how much sense it

⏹️ ▶️ Marco made um audio wise video wise it was great you know video wise there was i don’t really

⏹️ ▶️ Marco think i have any complaints about anything i was pretty impressed with how good it looked and everything

⏹️ ▶️ Marco audio wise the um the the parts we were standing in front of the car where you have

⏹️ ▶️ Marco the love mike worked out really

⏹️ ▶️ Casey well yeah it was a little windy on one of the days which was a little unfortunate but otherwise i was pretty

⏹️ ▶️ Casey happy with

⏹️ ▶️ Marco that and i heard like there was there was like one like big wind noise that you heard but in one of them but i only heard it like

⏹️ ▶️ Marco i only heard one of those i only noticed one of those so that that was pretty good i was being i was being kind in the sense

⏹️ ▶️ Marco that i was watching it on the built in speakers on my laptop because i

⏹️ ▶️ Marco, John i had

⏹️ ▶️ Marco had a busy night preparing for my house to explode and and i didn’t have time

⏹️ ▶️ Marco to like sit down my computer so i watched it on the laptop on a cow i thought like okay this is

⏹️ ▶️ Marco a real world environment this is how most people watch videos most people are not watching you two videos on like

⏹️ ▶️ Marco studio headphones you

⏹️ ▶️ Marco, John know but

⏹️ ▶️ Marco so so in the context of your audience it sounded great the factory at the time the only things that

⏹️ ▶️ Marco didn’t sound ideal were the parts in the car which you know already that like where were you were clipping a little bit and it was

⏹️ ▶️ Marco a little bit quieter than the rest of the video but other than that it was fine and that i do think

⏹️ ▶️ Marco that should be solvable by as i mentioned last episode or two episodes ago that should be solvable by like you know

⏹️ ▶️ Marco gain adjustments that that’s probably where that where that’s

⏹️ ▶️ Casey happening well yeah and actually i have purchased a sennheiser

⏹️ ▶️ Casey g three set up which is a wireless leveler mike which apparently is the

⏹️ ▶️ Casey like go to standard that everyone uses for pretty much everything with regard to leveler

⏹️ ▶️ Casey mike’s i have not received it yet it’s actually i bought it from b and h when

⏹️ ▶️ Casey they were having a sale so that comes monday additionally a different listener was kind enough to send

⏹️ ▶️ Casey me a samson so i’ll have to figure out what the actual make

⏹️ ▶️ Casey of this is or what the model is but it’s sam samson equivalent thereof which

⏹️ ▶️ Casey all happened like simultaneously so i’m going to try that out and see if that works any better

⏹️ ▶️ Casey in car cause like you said marco externally i think it was mostly fine i mean it wasn’t perfect but it was mostly fine

⏹️ ▶️ Casey but in the car i ended up using the mike off the go pro that was closest to my

⏹️ ▶️ Casey head because that was actually the best option i had which will tell you how crummy my options

⏹️ ▶️ Casey were so um i’m going to try one or both of these

⏹️ ▶️ Casey and hopefully one of them will be a little better in car cause that i think is my weak spot

⏹️ ▶️ Casey right now from an audio perspective is that in cars just it’s just bad and i mean it’s a crummy environment

⏹️ ▶️ Casey to record right like it’s not it’s not a very conducive requi environment to getting really clear

⏹️ ▶️ Casey um you know noise free audio out of a human’s voice you know out of a human

⏹️ ▶️ Casey body but i do feel like i am getting a little

⏹️ ▶️ Casey bit better with regard to audio and i do think i’m definitely getting medium better

⏹️ ▶️ Casey with regard to video i’m really happy with how the multi cam set up worked out i didn’t know if that was going to

⏹️ ▶️ Casey go well or not but i’m really happy with how that went and maybe my editing choices were great maybe they were terrible but i’m

⏹️ ▶️ Casey at least happy that i can know i now have a new tool in the tool box in which is you know having two

⏹️ ▶️ Casey different gopros pointing at me and flipping back and forth between them and the edited version

⏹️ ▶️ Marco yeah that product i thought worked pretty well like you know again that they were there like one or two cuts for was like oh that’s kind

⏹️ ▶️ Marco of weird cut but otherwise like it worked real well and and most of the time i didn’t even notice that you were using multicam which is

⏹️ ▶️ Marco which is what you want

⏹️ ▶️ Marco, Casey basically you

⏹️ ▶️ Marco don’t want people to be noticing it right and i was able to it it raises

⏹️ ▶️ Marco the production value the perceived production value of the video significantly when you have multifamily it makes it

⏹️ ▶️ Marco makes it flow better it makes it it keeps it keeps people’s visual interest more and

⏹️ ▶️ Marco it does it looks like a bigger a bigger production value you know result and so i think i think

⏹️ ▶️ Marco that all work really

⏹️ ▶️ Casey well cool john all right now that i’m built up tear me

⏹️ ▶️ John down i think i think i have all the same comments as i had on basically all the past videos i did notice

⏹️ ▶️ John the video and this one looked like look a lot better especially comparing to your first one like in terms of there wasn’t any scenes

⏹️ ▶️ John where where like the hives were blown out and everything like everything looked very clear that the video looked you know

⏹️ ▶️ John crisp and like you know just look good and you picked like i guess good sunny days to do it on at

⏹️ ▶️ John all that was great the audio my main complaint in the audio is i mean you can say like oh yes so that the

⏹️ ▶️ John in car was hard and the outer car was better but like i’m was thinking of watching it like would this video

⏹️ ▶️ John actually be better if all of the audio was like a medium

⏹️ ▶️ John worse like it was the inconsistency of the audio as you go

⏹️ ▶️ John, Casey from the outside and you’d be like oh

⏹️ ▶️ John pleasant i’m listening to casey talking you go for the inside it’s like what the hell is this

⏹️ ▶️ John, Casey right then you go back to the outside and it’s

⏹️ ▶️ John like the consistency like consistency at a level six is better than ten

⏹️ ▶️ John three ten

⏹️ ▶️ John, Casey three you know what i mean and

⏹️ ▶️ John and you do have to improve the audio in the car some you got to talk to demo because i’m sure hes not using expensive crap but he sounds better in

⏹️ ▶️ John the car than you do you got to figure what the hell he’s doing is

⏹️ ▶️ John, Casey he’s doing it

⏹️ ▶️ Casey like an hour i have asked in the past and in the past he said he was just using

⏹️ ▶️ Casey the on board mike on his iphone ten

⏹️ ▶️ Casey, John but i tried where

⏹️ ▶️ John where is the

⏹️ ▶️ Casey phone well and i that maybe that was the missing piece i don’t know and and but i’ve since since i asked

⏹️ ▶️ Casey and again this was like months ago since i asked i’ve seen him using levelers again so

⏹️ ▶️ Casey i’m not sure and i don’t and i don’t like i’m i’m a big fan of demers like everyone has their problems

⏹️ ▶️ Casey i do he does but by and large i’m a really big fan and i’m trying not to like totally fanboy all over him

⏹️ ▶️ Casey and be like oh tell me the stuff you do i just want to be just like you please can’t be just like you please you know i’m trying

⏹️ ▶️ Casey to like play it cool even though i’m very not cool um so i want to try these two these two

⏹️ ▶️ Casey new levelers see if they do any better and if neither of them do then i’m going to probably have to reach

⏹️ ▶️ Casey out again and be like dude please

⏹️ ▶️ John help me you got to come up with someone or you just got to do a voice over for it and speaking a voice over the second

⏹️ ▶️ John second thing again a consistency issue not so much a quality issue i think all your voice overs were good and all your stand ups were good

⏹️ ▶️ John and everything right but there was a different difference in like cadence and energy

⏹️ ▶️ John level between the live and the after and even some of the after stuff were different from each other and again

⏹️ ▶️ John consistency like it has to has to feel like an even has to feel like one sure like the same

⏹️ ▶️ John thing it’s kind of like you know like if you if you try to insert a section into

⏹️ ▶️ John a podcast later where like three days later we said we need a segment and we recorded all our voices sing a little bit different

⏹️ ▶️ John energies different or whatever that was the same in this video you got quieter and calmer than you got more animated and it was just

⏹️ ▶️ John, Casey too too much

⏹️ ▶️ John too much variability and i don’t know how to even that out other than to say and this is what everyone was trying to suggest

⏹️ ▶️ John you do or whatever but it’s like it’s up to you like one way to do it would be don’t talk so much life like just do

⏹️ ▶️ John all the talking later ah that’s what that’s one way you can do it you obviously are not going for that which is why i’m saying you

⏹️ ▶️ John just got to figure out a way to get it to work and just repeating comments from last time but it’s worth repeating stop

⏹️ ▶️ John looking at the camera when you drive for the love of god just

⏹️ ▶️ John, Casey never look at the camera when you drive oh come on

⏹️ ▶️ John i just glance it’s not that oh don’t glance we don’t need to see you we’re seeing you drive drive

⏹️ ▶️ John i don’t think that’s a sores e it’s a safety thing and be it’s you never have to look at the camera

⏹️ ▶️ John it’s fine we just want to see we’re watching you drive right we’re watching your hand shift you do not need to see you

⏹️ ▶️ John glance at us all so i think you’re fine with that i felt like this is this is like

⏹️ ▶️ John it doesn’t again not necessarily a style thing but like i felt like i didn’t see as much of the car as i wanted

⏹️ ▶️ John to which may sound crazy because you have all this footage of this car but i feel like do i feel like i know what

⏹️ ▶️ John the golfer looks like inside and out and maybe you know there’s i don’t know like i don’t

⏹️ ▶️ John know if the answer is a gimble or it’s like you know you always need more you know be real footage or whatever

⏹️ ▶️ John i know what you look like standing in front of things

⏹️ ▶️ John, Casey what what you look like i i wanted to see

⏹️ ▶️ John more of the car even when you were talking about the wing and how the wing is like a like not as ridiculous as this

⏹️ ▶️ John ugly wings the whole time you were talking about that i wanted to see like close ups of this wing

⏹️ ▶️ John that you’re talking

⏹️ ▶️ John, Casey about yeah okay that’s bad fair

⏹️ ▶️ John and you did you did have a cutaway shot of the wing and you showed it but it was so brief and then the rest of the time i was you talking by the wing and

⏹️ ▶️ John like show me show me all these things like yeah that’s the things the things that you you have shots of but you don’t realize

⏹️ ▶️ John like they’d go by fast and watch them like i wanted to see that weird flip up thing where like that you used to open the trunk

⏹️ ▶️ John and you showed it you had you had a shot of it but it felt like it went by too fast as i wanted

⏹️ ▶️ John to see more of that base was weird so you have to assume that when people are seeing the things you want to

⏹️ ▶️ John show us we’re seeing for the first time so they may like slow it down and are like linger on it longer than you think

⏹️ ▶️ John because that’s the only time we’re going to see that that latch and that thing my question is like the camera is in

⏹️ ▶️ John there but it’s also the latch on to your fingers at the limbs of the camera and i couldn’t tell because it all went kind of went by

⏹️ ▶️ John too

⏹️ ▶️ Casey fast oh that’s an interesting point the answers now but i totally get what you’re driving out

⏹️ ▶️ Casey, John though so i don’t how does that work

⏹️ ▶️ John if it flips on is the camera like does the camera not there

⏹️ ▶️ John, Casey well

⏹️ ▶️ Casey it’s it’s that the camera is still within the body of the car and you’re

⏹️ ▶️ Casey putting leverage on the vw logo itself does that make sense so

⏹️ ▶️ Casey, John you’re not

⏹️ ▶️ Casey so your hands your fingers are kind of tucked up directly against v w logo while

⏹️ ▶️ Casey the camera is still within the the rear body panel that that was a really poor

⏹️ ▶️ Casey description but does that make

⏹️ ▶️ John sense yeah i like that the bit about the censor thing and behind the the you know the logs

⏹️ ▶️ John i never would have guessed that and that’s a detail like i haven’t seen any place else and that’s a great that that type of thing is a great detail

⏹️ ▶️ John show in fact i saw a golf when i was walking the dog after watching this video and i saw that it did have

⏹️ ▶️ John the censor thing as it was in an r and it was probably like previous year this must be actually a new development

⏹️ ▶️ John so that was all great um those wheels are hideous you’re so right oh thank

⏹️ ▶️ Marco you thank you so honestly i disagree

⏹️ ▶️ John no no

⏹️ ▶️ Marco they’re not i think i think the style of wheels that casey wanted on it that he showed a little caption which was nice

⏹️ ▶️ Marco i that they should have been bigger as i think a little bit dated looking

⏹️ ▶️ Marco, Casey interesting

⏹️ ▶️ Marco and the new ones i think are i wouldn’t say that they’re the coolest we’ve ever seen but they look

⏹️ ▶️ Marco fresh that they look a little bit they look new and modern

⏹️ ▶️ John they do look more modern but i

⏹️ ▶️ John, Marco just don’t like the good

⏹️ ▶️ John style i’m not it just doesn’t it doesn’t appeal to me and i also think they’re a little oversized like

⏹️ ▶️ Marco i’m not like so yeah i couldn’t get a good look on like you know how thick

⏹️ ▶️ Marco is the tire versus

⏹️ ▶️ John the rims this the rubber band the modern trend of rubber man

⏹️ ▶️ Casey tires i was about to say exactly that on the brand new wheels its rubber bands

⏹️ ▶️ Casey around the wheel on the prior generation golf r

⏹️ ▶️ Casey golf i have i god i don’t know why it’s so hard for me anyway on the prior generation golf are

⏹️ ▶️ Casey um there was another inch of sidewalk i’m not mistaken

⏹️ ▶️ Marco yeah cause that like i’m looking at like a press picture of it now which is a little bit like you know it’s perfectly lit you can see

⏹️ ▶️ Marco on it’s turned slightly and the those boy you could not have those in the northeast

⏹️ ▶️ Marco like you you hit one pothole with that oh that those rooms are bent it’s

⏹️ ▶️ Marco, John due

⏹️ ▶️ John i think we’re going to see a swing bac in a different direction because a lot of modern cars across all

⏹️ ▶️ John price ranges come with these very low side walls and the people are damaging tires and you know damaging

⏹️ ▶️ John wheels and popping tires and just you can’t like i think it’s going to be a swing back and card vice people

⏹️ ▶️ John if you have the option of like the ridiculously huge wheels and you live like in new england or some place with weather or potholes

⏹️ ▶️ John may maybe get the one size down you’ll know i’m still living in fear of

⏹️ ▶️ John the fact that i might have two bent rims and i’ll have to you know when i get four new tires for my car to

⏹️ ▶️ John deal with the slow leak that i have in two of my tires i don’t want to find out it’s actually the rims cause they’re expensive

⏹️ ▶️ Casey yep that happened to me the b m w

⏹️ ▶️ John they’re expensive and i don’t want to find that out but it may be true anyway i like the video yeah more

⏹️ ▶️ John pictures of the car more inserts a even even things out consistencies

⏹️ ▶️ John but i think feel consistency is more important than overall quality because when you have the really really good sacraments

⏹️ ▶️ John that adjust contrast with the bad audio and the really bad segments whereas it was in the middle

⏹️ ▶️ John the whole way and i didn’t think it was too long at all i thought it was fine if those you know if i like i said i

⏹️ ▶️ John could have dealt with seeing more of the car yeah no i think

⏹️ ▶️ John i think you’re you know everything’s progressing here you just need to do more of these videos

⏹️ ▶️ John and my my general advice and this is kind of solid vices i

⏹️ ▶️ John i prefer video still feels like you’re kind of treating these videos a little bit like a blog post that you read

⏹️ ▶️ John out loud while driving and i think you should lean more heavily on what you can only do in

⏹️ ▶️ John video because you’re going to have the blog post anyway right you’ll have the opportunity to the blog post this is not like an opportunity to read

⏹️ ▶️ John an essay into youtube while driving a car and obviously you’re not doing that the whole time right you’re doing lots of stuff and

⏹️ ▶️ John shots of the car but like i would i would lean more heavily in that direction to someone and watching a video about the car

⏹️ ▶️ John you can be telling the same story that you told but while it’s going on like i want

⏹️ ▶️ John to see the car and i’m interested in your experience of the car and how you feel about it and seeing you use it and

⏹️ ▶️ John like you know that type of thing and i’m less interested as i’m less interested in you

⏹️ ▶️ John by giving me your comments when the only thing on the screen is you and a car

⏹️ ▶️ John that i’m not seeing different parts of

⏹️ ▶️ Casey okay yeah that makes sense i appreciate

⏹️ ▶️ John it and you definitely had much more of that in this one than you did in the past ones like i could feel that but i’m still i’m still feeling

⏹️ ▶️ John sometimes like when i’m watching one of the other car videos of the channels that i watch

⏹️ ▶️ John like they cut so fast away like there they never linger on anything for you know we never

⏹️ ▶️ John linger unlike just a talking head for a long time is always like this part of the car now this part of the car and this part of the car

⏹️ ▶️ John and just and again it doesn’t even have to be related right so i feel like you’re

⏹️ ▶️ John your presence is not as needed as you think it is in these

⏹️ ▶️ John, Casey your voice is needed so that your

⏹️ ▶️ John presence should be felt behind the camera by you know directing

⏹️ ▶️ Casey it yeah and that’s actually what you just said a moment ago about um if you know

⏹️ ▶️ Casey a cutaway being relevant that’s actually something i struggled with on this video earlier today when i

⏹️ ▶️ Casey was doing kind of my final couple of passes was i can’t remember which exact shot it was but there

⏹️ ▶️ Casey were a couple of places i think it was when i was showing the drive by you know when when the car was actually in

⏹️ ▶️ Casey motion and you’re outside the car looking at it i was showing that before i had

⏹️ ▶️ Casey done any of the ride along footage and previously when i was you know planning this

⏹️ ▶️ Casey all out and working in final cut my intention was to never show the car in motion prior to me

⏹️ ▶️ Casey getting in the car and starting to take it

⏹️ ▶️ Casey, John from a drive

⏹️ ▶️ John is not is that we’re not going to be confused

⏹️ ▶️ John, Casey by the content or

⏹️ ▶️ Marco how is that car driving who’s driving it there’s nobody in it because he didn’t get in yet oh my

⏹️ ▶️ Casey god but i mean

⏹️ ▶️ Casey, Marco i

⏹️ ▶️ Casey joke but that that i was trying to and i don’t remember if it was you on or marco that that

⏹️ ▶️ Casey said there’s an arc to this and in my head the ark was i am not driving now i will be driving

⏹️ ▶️ Casey later you shouldn’t see the car moving yet and and i agree with you that i think i

⏹️ ▶️ Casey need to do a better job of letting go of that and both of you i think

⏹️ ▶️ Casey he said you know if i’m talking about something i need to focus on and focus on it for longer i agree with that but additionally

⏹️ ▶️ Casey if i’m not necessarily talking about a specific piece of the car and i just want to cut away to something else that’s

⏹️ ▶️ Casey okay and i think what i need to work on for next time is i do have a fair bit of bee

⏹️ ▶️ Casey roll but i don’t think i’m good at figuring out what

⏹️ ▶️ Casey bee roll can i show that’s not just swooping over part of the car over and over and over again and i think i

⏹️ ▶️ Casey need to get better some fast swoop some slow swoops some zooms you

⏹️ ▶️ Casey, John know you don’t you know

⏹️ ▶️ John have any swoops like it doesn’t even need to be relevant like the trick is it just needs to be like like visual wallpaper

⏹️ ▶️ John like one of the best examples surprisingly because i watch a some of these videos is destiny videos

⏹️ ▶️ John there you know lots of destiny videos have like they’re talking about something

⏹️ ▶️ John like oh here’s an upcoming change in the game and here’s what i think about it right what the hell do you show when someone is saying

⏹️ ▶️ John let me tell you what i think about an upcoming change to the game ah you know the worst thing you could

⏹️ ▶️ John do is show a slow scrolling web page showing like the announcement

⏹️ ▶️ John, Marco so what

⏹️ ▶️ John people do is they just show footage that they have you know and it used

⏹️ ▶️ John to be that i used to see the videos like oh i don’t have any footage i’m just going to show you some footage of this last whatever

⏹️ ▶️ John match that i play or the last raid with friends or whatever people won’t even say that anymore they just say i’m going

⏹️ ▶️ John to talk about this thing and they just run footage or destiny playing hopefully interesting footage that keeps your attention

⏹️ ▶️ John but has nothing to do with what they’re saying like absolutely nothing to do

⏹️ ▶️ John, Marco with

⏹️ ▶️ John what they’re saying and that’s the extreme and it works it works fine you have relevance

⏹️ ▶️ John like you’re talking about the car you’re going to be showing the car like i don’t care that like hey he’s not talking

⏹️ ▶️ John about the car turning and the car is turning like i just want to see the car i want to see and it’s tough with the outside ones

⏹️ ▶️ John because you can’t you don’t have a drone that’s following the car and it’s hard to get external footage

⏹️ ▶️ Casey or whatever i want one so hard i want one so hard john

⏹️ ▶️ Casey, John but yeah i know

⏹️ ▶️ John i know i like but it i understand it’s hard to get that kind of food but don’t and you did it in a use used fight you we

⏹️ ▶️ John were talking about like driving in the car and you were showing it was when you are shown different angles from driving whatever and it was clear that you were

⏹️ ▶️ John showing footage that was not you talking like you were talking over footage that you had and that was great

⏹️ ▶️ John my i guess exactly that it was you know it all came together i felt like were you know

⏹️ ▶️ John i felt like i was i felt like i was watching more like like a tv show like put together professionally

⏹️ ▶️ John by a giant crew because it’s like i’m hearing your voice i’m hearing the story i’m seeing exciting footage that isn’t directly

⏹️ ▶️ John related to what you’re saying it was like it all gelled that was i think that was a great section and earlier when you were trying

⏹️ ▶️ John to do the same thing before you got in the car that felt a little bit clunkier but i saw you going for it so you’re getting

⏹️ ▶️ John there like you’re doing it there you know just keep keep going in that direction and just keep

⏹️ ▶️ John you know keep trying to do it don’t back away from me it feels awkward a few

⏹️ ▶️ Casey times i appreciate that makes sense i every i mean everything both you guys have said makes sense and i’m i’m pleased

⏹️ ▶️ Casey that you’re not deeply bothered by like the length or or the audio or anything

⏹️ ▶️ John so anything i think you could have gone longer like i’m willing to hear more of her and see more about this

⏹️ ▶️ John car and you especially the end of the whole upshot this is what we need to talk about now you’re like oh i’ve decided what my next

⏹️ ▶️ John car is going to be so what what’s what’s deal here

⏹️ ▶️ Casey so about that at the same time that i was deciding yeah what is the conclusion

⏹️ ▶️ Casey here cause i filmed most of the introduction and most of the footage fairly early

⏹️ ▶️ Casey to film multiple endings to throw off the press yeah

⏹️ ▶️ Casey as it turns out the conclusion i showed you guys is not my real conclusion my real conclusion is i

⏹️ ▶️ Casey hate this car um no i uh i filmed the conclusion i think thursday

⏹️ ▶️ Casey and the car went back on a friday morning and when i reached the conclusion

⏹️ ▶️ Casey that you know i think this will be my next car because if you really should

⏹️ ▶️ Casey watch the video if you haven’t yet listeners but if this the summary is that

⏹️ ▶️ Casey there are things that are missing on this car it does not have a sunroof it does not automatically park itself

⏹️ ▶️ Casey it doesn’t have true self driving on the highway or anything like that like even aaron’s

⏹️ ▶️ Casey volvo does but it has basically all the bare minimum things that i really want

⏹️ ▶️ Casey with the exception of sunroof and it has an over abundance of power and

⏹️ ▶️ Casey perhaps more interestingly than the over abundance of power it has a really great four wheel drive system

⏹️ ▶️ Casey that seems to laugh in the face of physics and that ability

⏹️ ▶️ Casey to just plant your foot and twist the wheel and just not give a crap and know

⏹️ ▶️ Casey that the car will figure out how to get you through that turn is just intoxicating and

⏹️ ▶️ Casey and kind of the the real i don’t know party piece

⏹️ ▶️ Casey or the real interesting part of the conclusion i that i came to which i said on the video was that hey

⏹️ ▶️ Casey you know i love a sunroof and the g t i which is a less powerful version of the same car has a sunroof and it has

⏹️ ▶️ Casey self parking and it has you know some of the other things i wish this car had but the thing of it is is that all miss

⏹️ ▶️ Casey sunroof may be six months a year maybe eight or ten or according to john you know

⏹️ ▶️ Casey fifty one weeks of the year because there no is no winter here but i will miss that

⏹️ ▶️ Casey power if i had a g t i conversely i would miss the power of the gulf or every time i got in the car gulf

⏹️ ▶️ Casey, John or every

⏹️ ▶️ Casey time i got in the car and and so i think if i were to buy a car tomorrow

⏹️ ▶️ Casey i think i would be buying a golf or that being said as i said last

⏹️ ▶️ Casey episode which may or may not have made the published version i have i have been having many

⏹️ ▶️ Casey conversations with aaron about what we should do about cars and the current working conclusion

⏹️ ▶️ Casey is maybe we could be a one car family maybe that’ll work you don’t have

⏹️ ▶️ Casey an office to go to any more it should work shouldn’t it and so

⏹️ ▶️ Casey i think what we’re probably going to do is carmax m w because it’s just sitting there rotting in the driveway

⏹️ ▶️ Casey right now carmax of b m w and then see how it goes

⏹️ ▶️ Marco i an sell it to carmax for clarification

⏹️ ▶️ Casey yeah sorry i’m assuming everyone’s an american who’s done this before a carmax is a place that they’ll buy

⏹️ ▶️ Casey a car from you even if you don’t buy a car from them and so and it’s

⏹️ ▶️ Casey very easy it’s no hassle you i understand that i could get a better price for that if i sold it myself

⏹️ ▶️ Casey or perhaps sold it through different means but the advantage of carmack is it’s the it’s like one of

⏹️ ▶️ Casey those trade in places online some of whom have sponsored the show in the past you know you just send them a device and

⏹️ ▶️ Casey they give you a check and maybe that check isn’t as much as you’d like but it’s super easy well carmax is that same thing you

⏹️ ▶️ Casey bring in your car they look at it they they hand you a check right then if you decide to sell it to them so anyway so we’re

⏹️ ▶️ Casey probably going to sell the car to carmax the b w to carmax try being a one car family for a while and see

⏹️ ▶️ Casey how it goes and if it goes well maybe we’ll stick with that if it doesn’t then we have to have

⏹️ ▶️ Casey a tough conversation about you know should i really be buying a forty thousand dollar car or should

⏹️ ▶️ Casey i just be getting like a beater that i can use in a pinch if need be and and i don’t know the

⏹️ ▶️ Casey answer to that question by one accord

⏹️ ▶️ John would you still haven’t test driven that’s true

⏹️ ▶️ Casey but

⏹️ ▶️ Casey, Marco i’m

⏹️ ▶️ Casey surprised you can yell at me for my accord dig speaking of that was just for you john did you not even notice

⏹️ ▶️ John it i but you don’t know anything about accords you never even driven one

⏹️ ▶️ John, Casey too old for an accord

⏹️ ▶️ Casey yeah that’s exactly right are not old enough for an accord

⏹️ ▶️ Casey, John actually is i

⏹️ ▶️ John believe what i said no you said too young for

⏹️ ▶️ John, Casey or you’re not too young for a cord that all i know can you can see the gray and that beard

⏹️ ▶️ Casey it’s funny you say that there were two places in the video where i made a joke

⏹️ ▶️ Casey about how old i was and i and i said in one of them i i did the same hand

⏹️ ▶️ Casey motion in both but in one of them i think i said that much is obvious and what i cut away from because you couldn’t

⏹️ ▶️ Casey really tell on the video is i was like pawing at the corner of my beard and my sideburns which

⏹️ ▶️ Casey have gone very gray and so the joke was going to be look at me i’m so old i have all this gray hair but he couldn’t

⏹️ ▶️ Casey you couldn’t really tell on the video and so because of that i am i actually

⏹️ ▶️ Casey put in like other brill filler shots so it didn’t look really stupid like why is he grabbing his beard

⏹️ ▶️ Casey in his side with little weirdo well that’s all

⏹️ ▶️ Casey, John right i am more gray than i do at

⏹️ ▶️ John my

⏹️ ▶️ Casey beard that’s probably true

⏹️ ▶️ John actually oh one more thing i i is against his personal preference but i would like it

⏹️ ▶️ John if you retired at the top of the parking garage cause it’s not particularly scenic and i need

⏹️ ▶️ John variety

⏹️ ▶️ Casey i thought about that and actually the place where we did the drive by um that’s

⏹️ ▶️ Casey a park somewhat nearest to us stumpy creepy and that i think might be the

⏹️ ▶️ Casey next backdrop

⏹️ ▶️ John when you were driving i was like look at all these beautiful locations everything’s green it’s sunny me anywhere and i am looking

⏹️ ▶️ John at concrete

⏹️ ▶️ Casey yeah that’s fair the idea at the time which i think i’m wrong but the idea was

⏹️ ▶️ Casey i want the background to be as like nondescript and maybe even boring as possible so that you’re

⏹️ ▶️ Casey not attracted to the background you’re attracted to me in the car but i think you’re right i think i certainly need to

⏹️ ▶️ Casey change it up even if i don’t retire the parking garage but um i have

⏹️ ▶️ Casey i have a couple of ideas of where i can do this so i think that’s fair but no the car is great

⏹️ ▶️ Casey the car is really really great i was stunned by how easy it was

⏹️ ▶️ Casey to drive which seems silly but as i said in the video any time you drive a

⏹️ ▶️ Casey clutched car you know three pedal car the place that the clutch catches is different the

⏹️ ▶️ Casey way the gear shift works it just feels a little bit different and for me it usually takes me at least

⏹️ ▶️ Casey a few hours if not a few days to really really get used to how a car

⏹️ ▶️ Casey feels and be able to drive it with real real confidence and it was stunning

⏹️ ▶️ Casey how quickly i was able to grasp it in the gulf for

⏹️ ▶️ Casey it was i felt within like ten minutes so it was i was as good in it as i was on my bmw

⏹️ ▶️ Casey that i’ve had for six years which was super cool and and in general it was it’s

⏹️ ▶️ Casey a really well built really well made car i got it with seven hundred miles on it like the the car

⏹️ ▶️ Casey was almost literally brand new i returned it with something like a thousand or eleven hundred miles

⏹️ ▶️ Casey on it and i loved it i really did and

⏹️ ▶️ Casey, John the other

⏹️ ▶️ John switch on the accelerator though that’s really

⏹️ ▶️ John, Casey weird isn’t

⏹️ ▶️ John that weird i’ve never seen that before in my life on a stick shift car

⏹️ ▶️ Casey that’s the thing so my bmw is of an era where bmw’s had a kick down switch and granted

⏹️ ▶️ Casey i haven’t driven my bmw in like a month but i’m pretty darn sure doesn’t have kicked on switch earns

⏹️ ▶️ Casey although absolutely does but it’s automatic why does this thing have a kick down switch it makes no sense

⏹️ ▶️ John it seems like a thing they could leave all the stuff in there but disable like like make it so you don’t feel like

⏹️ ▶️ John disconnect it from the mechanism if they just want to like save you know part sharing or

⏹️ ▶️ Marco whatever can you explain what that

⏹️ ▶️ Casey does yet so in the interest of brevity i didn’t go on and on about it in the video but

⏹️ ▶️ Casey basically the way it works is in an automatic car that’s geared

⏹️ ▶️ Casey so you wouldn’t see this in our tesla but i bet you tiffs car has it if you push the pedal

⏹️ ▶️ Casey all the way to the floor you feel a stop and you feel like that’s it that’s the floor

⏹️ ▶️ Casey, Marco board

⏹️ ▶️ Casey but if you push a little bit further and it shouldn’t require an over abundance of effort

⏹️ ▶️ Casey but you know you have to push then there’s like a little click and it goes just a hair

⏹️ ▶️ Casey further into the floor and not well not literally into the for board but you know what i mean like it goes even deeper and what

⏹️ ▶️ Casey that indicates

⏹️ ▶️ Casey, John to the

⏹️ ▶️ Casey core touch yeah actually

⏹️ ▶️ Casey, Marco a that

⏹️ ▶️ Casey in a lot of ways that

⏹️ ▶️ Casey, Marco is expert you

⏹️ ▶️ Marco close and then you push harder

⏹️ ▶️ Marco, Casey to get deeper

⏹️ ▶️ Casey exactly no seriously you’re you’re spot on and what

⏹️ ▶️ Casey, John that does is it an automatic

⏹️ ▶️ Casey and an automatic what it’ll do is it will force the car to downshift

⏹️ ▶️ Casey as low as it can possibly go you know given the car speed and what not and it’ll also of course

⏹️ ▶️ Casey have been floored so you’re saying to the car i want as much as you can give me you know give

⏹️ ▶️ Casey her all she’s got scotty and that is a really convenient thing in an automatic say you’re going

⏹️ ▶️ Casey to pass or something like that or for whatever reason you really need all the power the car has now

⏹️ ▶️ Casey but that makes no sense in a manual transmission car

⏹️ ▶️ Casey because you’re the one controlling the gears it’s not going to share it for you so what is the purpose of this

⏹️ ▶️ Casey, John kick down

⏹️ ▶️ John to read the owner’s manual does

⏹️ ▶️ Casey serve some other purpose and this i glanced at it and i did not notice anything i i

⏹️ ▶️ Casey should have looked one more time but i didn’t notice anything and i think it’s just a part spin thing is my understanding

⏹️ ▶️ Casey but i have not verified that anyway but i love the car and if you haven’t driven one i

⏹️ ▶️ Casey highly suggest it i have driven a g t in the past which i made brief mention of it in the video and i

⏹️ ▶️ Casey might be getting one as a press car maybe

⏹️ ▶️ Casey the problem that i have of the golf golf r which i didn’t want to labor too much in the video but i did mention

⏹️ ▶️ Casey is that it feels every bit of its forty thousand dollars which is good and also a little

⏹️ ▶️ Casey bit bad like it feels like a forty thousand dollar car in some ways it feels better in some ways it feels maybe

⏹️ ▶️ Casey not like a forty thousand dollar car

⏹️ ▶️ Casey, Marco where’s my sun

⏹️ ▶️ Casey roof but anyway um the g t i that i drove it was a thirty thirty two

⏹️ ▶️ Casey thousand dollar car something like that and it definitely felt like it was way nicer

⏹️ ▶️ Casey than a thirty or thirty two thousand dollar car should be because it had basically everything the golf car

⏹️ ▶️ Casey has except less power and two fewer driven wheels but

⏹️ ▶️ Casey the switch gears all the same it has a sunroof it has automatic parking you know in

⏹️ ▶️ Casey so many ways it felt really good actually the one thing in the g t i doesn’t have that’s a big deal is it does not have the digital

⏹️ ▶️ Casey dash which i actually like the digital dash but i can to i could make an argument that the digital

⏹️ ▶️ Casey dash is terrible but i actually like it and so the g t i doesn’t have that but otherwise i left

⏹️ ▶️ Casey driving that g t i which i drove for literally fifteen twenty minutes i left that g t i thinking that

⏹️ ▶️ Casey is way nicer than a thirty thousand dollar car should be and so

⏹️ ▶️ Casey if you’re interested in this sort of a car you should definitely try the g t i

⏹️ ▶️ Casey and if that is fast enough for you just buy it on the spot and if it isn’t or if you live in a place that

⏹️ ▶️ Casey that you know has a lot of snow then look at the gulf or because that’s just the g

⏹️ ▶️ Casey t i but more

⏹️ ▶️ Marco i think you should give the g t i serious consideration because the way you talked about both cars

⏹️ ▶️ Marco first of all you can say get ice

⏹️ ▶️ Marco, Casey and then

⏹️ ▶️ Marco and you also you seem to like it it almost seemed

⏹️ ▶️ Marco like you were trying to rationalize the golf r because it’s like

⏹️ ▶️ Marco faster and the better performance version but it sounded like you’d be happier with

⏹️ ▶️ Marco a lot of things about the gti

⏹️ ▶️ Casey the you know you are not the first person to have said that and there is a lot of truth to what you’re saying

⏹️ ▶️ Casey but i would always miss

⏹️ ▶️ Marco it though i mean you justify it in the video you know you brought up a good point which is you know you kind of did that

⏹️ ▶️ Marco with your b m w that like you didn’t save it for the m three you got like three thirty five instead but

⏹️ ▶️ Marco first of all what you got was a car that in many cases is faster than the m three of the time

⏹️ ▶️ Marco um i have a feeling despite all the problems you’ve had with that you would have had more with an m three

⏹️ ▶️ Marco and you know it it was still a pretty amazing car and it was more practical in a few ways

⏹️ ▶️ Marco so if you wanted to go either way i could encourage you could justify it i could give you reasons for either either

⏹️ ▶️ Marco direction that you that you might want to take here based on what you said in the video i think you

⏹️ ▶️ Marco probably would be happier with the gti and john can stop making fun of

⏹️ ▶️ Marco the way you say

⏹️ ▶️ Casey things that is true and that might be worth it

⏹️ ▶️ John alone it’s it’s still you still have to say golf right it’s not just the g t

⏹️ ▶️ Marco i no you could just say g t i i’m pretty sure i mean this is a trim level

⏹️ ▶️ Casey yes i mean it is a trim level of the of the gulf so john is technically right but if you say

⏹️ ▶️ Casey g t i to anyone you would never

⏹️ ▶️ Marco need to say it exactly you can’t just say hey i got a new

⏹️ ▶️ Casey r right exactly right because then i have an r eight don’t i that’s what i have

⏹️ ▶️ Casey uh you know you very well may be right you very very well may be right and i still stand by

⏹️ ▶️ Casey what i was saying that i would miss that power in the gulf are but i wouldn’t always miss the

⏹️ ▶️ Casey sunroof however i absolutely think you may be onto something and the other nice thing

⏹️ ▶️ Casey is if we decide that we want to go a slightly ever so slightly more

⏹️ ▶️ Casey frugal approach and in assuming we get a second car at all you can get a lightly used g t i

⏹️ ▶️ Casey with car play for not a tremendous amount of money for like twenty five thirty thousand dollars

⏹️ ▶️ Casey or maybe even less than

⏹️ ▶️ Marco that wait isn’t that pretty close to the price of the

⏹️ ▶️ Marco, Casey new one yeah it’s close

⏹️ ▶️ Marco it’s like thirty thirty

⏹️ ▶️ Casey two yeah somewhere that race and again

⏹️ ▶️ Casey, Marco i mean i

⏹️ ▶️ Marco get just the got the new one with the new arrant

⏹️ ▶️ Casey well that’s also true but

⏹️ ▶️ Casey, Marco i i

⏹️ ▶️ Casey haven’t looked into how how much a used g t i is but my point is just that you know when you go used

⏹️ ▶️ Casey you could maybe be literally half the cost of of a new r and then that changes

⏹️ ▶️ Casey the calculus a little bit you know what i mean so i don’t know i’m not sure what we’re going to do we may end

⏹️ ▶️ Casey up doing nothing but i don’t know it it’s like i said the end of the video it’s a great

⏹️ ▶️ Casey problem to have right like i get the the reasonably reasonably affordable g t i and

⏹️ ▶️ Casey am happy or i get the the r and i’m happy you know

⏹️ ▶️ Casey so one way or another and or i just don’t get anything in and i’m very sad but

⏹️ ▶️ Casey, John i’m also less broke

⏹️ ▶️ Casey but we’ll see how it goes but all in all i had a lot of fun with the car

⏹️ ▶️ Casey i really enjoyed the car i really enjoyed making the video it was stressful it was hard because i

⏹️ ▶️ Casey wanted to have it done by the time we record this on friday evening which i did but that was tough

⏹️ ▶️ Casey and i’m glad i had the deadline for the record because that forced me to really get it done and not just dilly dally for a week

⏹️ ▶️ Casey but you know since we got back from london we had a few days where i

⏹️ ▶️ Casey mostly relaxed and then that friday that we got the friday after we got back was when i got

⏹️ ▶️ Casey the r then i spent all of the following week basically being a ghost

⏹️ ▶️ Casey and just filming non stop and then this week was the week

⏹️ ▶️ Casey after where all i did was at it non stop and so next week

⏹️ ▶️ Casey i feel like i need a vacation at this point like next week i am very excited to maybe

⏹️ ▶️ Casey crack open my sap that i haven’t looked at in like six months and maybe write some code and and just be

⏹️ ▶️ Casey relaxed for a little while cause i tell you what this this whole unemployment thing

⏹️ ▶️ Casey it’s been a lot busier than i expected which again is is a good thing but

⏹️ ▶️ Casey i’m sleepy

⏹️ ▶️ Marco man yeah like when you first go independent you think you’ll have all this time and then

⏹️ ▶️ Marco life fills it

⏹️ ▶️ Casey yep life finds a way that’s a reference john
